Some time back i proposed [CONTAINS_SUGAR]
All I know is that I'd try to add the tag to cats and brew them into booze

Toady has stated that once they send real armies that didn't just appear out of thin air, sieges may not even happen at all depending on where your site is in relation tobthe rest of your civ, and the sieges will probably be much more rare.
In what way does this apply to eating?

Quote
In any case, your explanation is not stated in game and is therefore not a valid argument against removing the tag. Besides, goblins being unable to eat makes very little sense. For the third and final time, I'm 99% certain that Toady intends to make goblins require food like every other race.
Plenty of other creatures have NO_EAT, and other tags which really don't "make sense" for a biological creature. Toady has also said that goblins are closely connected to demons (in less general words), and therefore it's not unreasonable that they feed on whatever they feed on. And finally, if he intends to...why hasn't he?

For some reason you had claimed goblins only sent out so many sieges because they sat around doing nothing all day, having no need to farm. While a few ThreeToe stories do mention goblins having come from hell, they still aren't really demons and die easily enough.

There's virtually no story reason as to why they shouldn't eat, and no gameplay reason either. In fact, a lot of us would probably like it if goblins needed to bring along supplies for their sieges. It would be fun to send people to sneak into their camp and poison the food, and getting their stuff after they run away or are vanquished would be a nice reward. Heck, it would even add more depth to the game. You'd be encouraged to keep an emergency stockpile of food and drink, so that your fortress could outlast the supplies even some of the largest sieges.

As in for your other questions, I've answered them all in my previous posts, if you bothered to actually read what I said.

Well, if goblins didn't eat it would easily explain where they get all those soldiers, no?

I admit that goblins having supply lines could be fun, so could goblins who never starve.

I've actually countered that argument about not adding goblin metabolism back in; there IS worldgen hunting now, which means carnivorous races CAN live.

Goblins dying easily doesn't imply that they aren't demonic in some subtle way. Heck, a bunch of demons are just flesh-and-blood that happens to be ginormous.

Anything else I missed?

Goblins that never starve could be !!fun!! in an annoying and unwanted way, but not fun like goblins that have limited resources when sieging you. And as in for the whole hunting dilemma, Toady could have just not got around to removing the tag, or goblins would still die off as huge settlements eventually hunt all the nearby animals and are left without food. I don't claim to know why Toady hasn't yet removed the tag, but I'm not just conjuring these statements in my mind. I'm certain that it was stated somewhere that goblins only have NO_EAT to ensure they survive.

I don't remember reading that, but I don't really care enough about it to argue more.

Instead of arguing, let's continue on this supply idea.  Since i'm pretty sure Goblins don't mind eating sentients, if they were starving, they'd eat any dead dwarves, or even their own comrades.  When they all go to sleep, you could send out a squad of guys, and, if some sort of way to tell your dwarves to stealth was added, you could add forgotten beast extract to their water supply, or smear it on their food.  In the morning when they eat and drink, they'll digest the poison and FUN will occur.  It might make them kill each other, or give them slow, painful brain necrosis.

What about having goblins feed off killing? Like, they need to fulfill a killing quota each year, or else they'll go insane and kill each others.

These goblins are kinda like demons, anyway, so food probably isn't something Toady is planning for goblins.

Feeding off of death or something makes sense for the Hell-Born origin of goblins.

Also goblin armies having crates of live sentients with them to kill on their way sounds feasible as a supply. I don't think the goblins are advanced enough to do that, though.

The goblins have huge towers and have domesticate trolls. I think they would be advanced enough to bring along a few captives in cages if they needed to feed on the souls of things they kill, or something like that. What they eat doesn't really matter that much in terms of gameplay, you'll still just want to remove or sabotage their supplies whether it's by lighting their pancakes on fire or killing all the kobolds they brought to feed on.

Even if Goblins don't need to eat, surely human sieges could be made a lot more interesting if they had to bring their own supplies.

Intelligence is an issue, but in the other way. Bringing live sentients along isn't a good idea unless they're going to be used as slaves. Unless you mean for the emotion eater idea, of course.

And elven. And kobold. And animalman.

Unless you provoke your allies, goblins are the only siegers. Otherwise, I wouldn't care about whether goblins ate that much because I could have fun stealing and sabotaging the supplies that the other races brought on their sieges.

Wrong.
1. Kobolds also siege if they steal enough--I think the requirement is something like 3-5 items.
2. You can start at war with other civs.

I saw a reference to goblins not eating in the FotF post and asked a question which means that this debate on if goblins are supposed to end should be resolved the next time he answers the FotF questions! So if we can just wait a few months...yeah, not likely. In any case, shall we discuss non-food supplies that goblins could require? I'll start: Food for the trolls and mounts.

This will most certainly change. While Toady is going for a generic fantasy simulation, he's not going for a "Good" (Dwarves-Elves-Humans) alliance against Dark(Goblins). As soon as different humans/elf/dwarf cultures and better diplomace get implemented (Army arc, I believe) we'd see far more varied attackers and siegers.

Think Vikings and stuff.
