Sustenance
« on: December 27, 2012, 10:34:46 pm »

I know with the next update, the world will actually continue to progress,  not just freeze like it does now.  However, when Stozu the goblin sieger enters my map, if he stays for awhile, I think he should become hungry/thirsty/tired.  I basically think that your dwarves shouldn't be the only ones that have their 3 basic needs, 4 if you count sanity.  Siegers should bring little sleeping bags, or just sleep on the floor, and should need food and water.  If they get hungry, they could hunt your local wildlife, or butcher animals of yours that they've killed.  They could drink what they could find.  They would also bring their own supplies, and if you could secure their supplies, they would break once they began to starve/dehydrate.  Same with Merchants, although they'd eat their own food and drink their own drink.  I'd love to capture some infamous goblin, and chain him up somewhere to starve to death slowly.  Not eating/drinking for awhile would mean you might periodically black out, especially in a hot climate.  Not sleeping would mean if you were fighting, and were using up alot of energy, you might literally fall asleep.  I just think this would add alot of depth to the game, and would be great fun.  Who knows, with future releases, you might even be able to set fire to the goblin's miniature booze stockpile... and KABOOM!  Of course that'd be a waste of booze ;).  If the goblins leave because they've been waiting awhile, they'll pack up their shit and leave.  If they're retreating because commander X was shot, they might leave their supplies in their haste, and that's just more loot for you.  Any thoughts?

Definitely a good idea but I'd be surprised if this wasn't already planned.

Planned, suggested before, and irrelevant for goblins (last time I checked they had NOEAT, which indicates that they don't need to eat).

Considering that if they remain as they currently are, with everyone being at war with them usually, it does deny a lot of interesting possibilities with supply caravans and such like.

[REQUIRES_NUTRITION:PROTEIN]
Like that?

Some time back i proposed giving fruits a [CONTAINS_SUGAR] fag and letting the game logic decide what the outcome of a brewing is, as opposed to having it all be raw-defined.
But why stop at fruit? [HAS_NUTRITION:VITC/PROTEIN/CARBOHYDRATES/FIBER]
And give all living things nutritional requirements that need to be met, or suffer starvation and scurvy.

Although i'd hate to be the CPU that has to check every one of the 200 dwarves in the fortress each day for whether they've been eating their veggies.

I think goblins have NO_EAT so they don't starve in worldgen, or something along those lines. In any case, the tag could and should eventually be changed.

Yeah, NO_EAT is also for Kobolds, as they currently cannot produce enough food to survive, technically, all natural creatures need to eat and drink... otherwise, if our friend Stozu the goblin decided to live in a cave somewhere, he'd technically be immortal.  No need to eat or drink.. and never die of old age.

On the other hand, it explains why they send out so many sieges. They don't need to farm or anything, and probably have a lot of excess population at home, so they send out a bunch of misfits, malcontents, and madmen to attack dwarven (and other) outposts.

...How is this related?
In addition, I can't see checks being more than once a month, probably only once a season. Dwarves only eat a couple of times a month, and not eating vegetables for a dozen meals won't significantly affect you (probably; I haven't tried).

But NO_EAT wasn't given to kobolds, and now that hunting in worldgen has been implemented goblins can get food. And don't goblins still have NO_EAT?

goblins don't have to eat because they feed off the heartbreak of children they kidnapped

Kobolds weren't given the tag, which is why they almost always were all dead within a few years. Now that they steal from markets, they sometimes live. But as for hunting in worldgen, I don't know anything about that. All I can say is that goblins will likely have the NO_EAT tag eventually removed.

There is hunting in worldgen. That's why historical migrants sometimes show up with high Amusher skill and tons of animal kills.
I have pointed out a perfectly good narrative reason for goblins to not eat.

Toady has stated that once they send real armies that didn't just appear out of thin air, sieges may not even happen at all depending on where your site is in relation tobthe rest of your civ, and the sieges will probably be much more rare.

In any case, your explanation is not stated in game and is therefore not a valid argument against removing the tag. Besides, goblins being unable to eat makes very little sense. For the third and final time, I'm 99% certain that Toady intends to make goblins require food like every other race.

In what way does this apply to eating?

Plenty of other creatures have NO_EAT, and other tags which really don't "make sense" for a biological creature. Toady has also said that goblins are closely connected to demons (in less general words), and therefore it's not unreasonable that they feed on whatever they feed on. And finally, if he intends to...why hasn't he?
