Well, police have reinforcements typically, and we don't have a ship yet (right?) to get off-planet, so we'd be walking Wanted targets...

Won't the police forces have in-system defense ships, and the ability to call the local equivalent of the navy if the situation calls for it? I'd rather not start our space exploration in fear of annihilation.

I'd rather get some things normally first, then we can be more independent. Which is why you can try to crack that ATM, but don't expect us to save you yet.

Err... if I was to steal a car, the cops won't call the army in to catch me.  If I stole a tank, yeah, but as long as we don't steal anything too important, they'll probably only come after us in their squad-car equivalence.

But we'd likely be forced to attack or destroy the squad-cars to get away, unless we can massively outrun them. And then yes, they would probably call in the military because we're wrecking stuff.
