Barbarossa's X-TREME Pokemon Journey - A Close Encounter!
« on: December 24, 2012, 01:25:58 pm »

Last night, I had a dream involving the 5 survivors of my 3 completed Nuzlocke(+) runs of various Pokemon games, and it inspired me to take up the quest once again, this time in Unova. I've done a couple half-baked Let's Plays of Nuzlocke runs before, but they slowed down my gameplay too much and made it pretty boring for me. This time, I'll be doing short comics for any outstanding moments, and ignoring the plot-based style of my previous attempts. The grinding will be left out, unless one of my Pokemon dies while doing it.

So, this is where I'll be chronicling the highlights of a run through of Pokemon Black 2 on Challenge Mode with the following rules:

1. Pokemon die when they faint. 'Dead' Pokemon go in a graveyard box. (Or two. I've filled up an entire box before.)
2. One Pokemon per route, and only one of any given species.
3. No items except berries. A lot harder in a game where you can't grow them.
4. No Pokemon centers, and I can only use the wandering nurses/doctors once apiece, because they goddamn force you too after fighting them.
5. Every Pokemon must have some sort of clever nickname. In Ruby, they were all scientists and artists. In Platinum, they were all generals and emperors. In HeartGold, they were all fantastic alternate names for their species. (Geodude? More like Broulder)

Two notes here: I'll need a theme for names, and I won't be able to start on the game proper for about 2 weeks, when my friend and I meet back up again at college and he can give me the Challenge Mode key. Until then, I'll be practicing by throwing memorable moments from my previous games up in comic form.

EDIT: As promised, we have our meaningless leaderboard!

If you're romping through Unova, will you be using the Dream World to get berries?

I didn't even know that was a thing. I'll only be getting them through beating up rangers and that guy that gives out a set of 5 random berries each day. Not sure if there is any means of directly purchasing berries, but I won't be using it. I'll be living off the land, not buying things. After doing some math, I'll be allowing found PP ups and PP restoration items. (None of the found healing items or - god forbid - vendor trash.)

I should have the Tale of Stantler and Morty up tomorrow at some point. I'm still figuring out how MSPaint 7 can be so terrible, and am trying to figure out how to just install MSPaint Vista over it.  ::)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is the tale of Antleer, mighty Stantler of Route 37, Ghostslayer. When he was found by the traveler MAJORA, he proved quite a challenging foe. At the time, Poltergas the Gastly was in training, and MAJORA did not expect to any ghost-type Pokemon in the wild, even so close to Ecruteak. Little did he know, the wild Stantler of the area were a goddamn surprising lot. They'd jump out of the bushes at a moment's notice, scare the bajeezus out of you with Astonish, and then simply run away. It was quite an effective tactic against Poltergas, so Dandeflyon the Hoppip was sent in to cull the threat. After a few hard fought battles (Every battle involving Dandeflyon was hard-fought.), MAJORA decided that the next Stantler that attacked would become the sixth member of the much-battered party. After a ludicrous number of tackles, a stun spore, and amazing dodging luck, Dandeflyon had worn down the Stantler enough to catch it. Upon its capture, the Pokedex revealed the source of the constant terror exuded by the deer-creatures: their horns surrounded small spheres that, when combined with the ovoid nature of the horn gaps, resembled eyes. Terrifying ones. And so was the name Antleer bestowed upon this proud creature.

Much time passed, as MAJORA's team wandered the world in training for a confrontation with Morty of Ecruteak. Antleer actually had a difficult time keeping up, as between a mediocre Stomp and a widely-resisted Astonish, there was little he could do to the native Pokemon, especially other Normal types. Everything changed when MAJORA arrived back in Ecruteak and entered the Gym there. He had already used his single credit for the Pokemon Center there, so not all of his Pokemon were at peak strength, though most had rested well at the last Center they'd visited.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It was a foul place, cloudy with some sort of evil mist. Elderly trainers clung to the lit areas along the path, training with their ghostly companions. The first had five Gastly. Five. And each only a few levels under the average party level. Craquadile was sent out first, and he almost slew one in a single blow. The return shot from the Gastly struck him in a vital place, however, and he was laid low. Bleeding and on the verge of death, another had to take his place.

Their special attacks were too much for Broulder the Mighty, their numbers too risky for Poltergas the Cunning, their speed too fast for Torpir the Torpid, their existence too great for Dandeflyon the Extant. One could lay them all to waste. Antleer leapt into the fray, the ghastly Gastly fleeing in terror from his mighty visage. None could stop him as he literally scared every ghost in the building unto death. Until Morty. Antleer's PP was low, and so he devoured MAJORA's final Leppa berry. It would have to be enough.

It was not enough. Sure, Morty's Gastly went down quickly. The lesser of the two Haunters went down easily enough. The greater, however, was resilient enough to take two attacks, but kept trying to use its ghostly tongue to Lick the oblivious Antleer, who was immune to such attacks. Morty had faith in it, and recovered its health with a potion. Fair enough, both combatants were entitled to three items in a league match. Another Astonish, another Lick. With 5 Astonishes remaining, it seemed Antleer would sweep Morty before him. The lights dimmed, and MAJORA was astonished to see the Haunter driving a nail through its own body. It had laid a Curse on Antleer. In four turns, Antleer would be dead, unless he escaped the battle. He decided to stick around and finish off the Haunter before escaping. Morty's Gengar appeared, its glaring red eyes fixed upon Antleer. Twice did Antleer attempt to scare it, and twice the Gengar remained standing, battered as it was. It was about time for Antleer to get out of there when the worst happened - Gengar used Mean Look. Its terrible eyes gazed into Antleer's, and it was all he could do to keep attacking. But that Leppa berry had not been enough. Rounding errors had allowed Antleer to survive with a single hit point, but he could not escape, and he could not finish the Gengar off. The Curse claimed him.

Dumbstruck, MAJORA had few options. All of the weaknesses his party had against the Gastly would be multiplied tenfold against this monster. It was faster, it was stronger, and it was able to take more punishment than any Gastly ever could. Torpir was simply too slow. The incoming Shadow Ball would have slain him instantly. Broulder was strong, but MAJORA doubted any move asides from Magnitude could seriously harm the Gengar, and it was levitating. No dice there. Dandeflyon was fast, but couldn't actually hurt the damn thing. Craquadile might have been fast enough, but earlier paralysis and his wounds in the first fight of the gym meant he'd be a sitting duck. It would have to come down to Poltergas. At level 24, he was still a Gastly. Not even close to a match for the level 25 Gengar. So it was there a cunning plan was hatched: Dandeflyon would try to paralyze the monster as quickly as it could with Stun Spore, and if it could not move, he would escape so that Poltergas could hammer it before it could strike back. The initial stage went well - the paralysis dust went into effect immediately, slowing down the Gengar's movements... but not stopping them. It lobbed another Shadow Ball at Dandeflyon, who went down as readily as a leaf in an autumn gale. At least Poltergas had a free switch - and with the Choice Specs purchased by MAJORA's mother (using his savings, naturally.), a mighty blow was struck. Antleer's sacrifice had not been in vain, and the Fog Badge was obtained.

I'll be going with less of a historical style when I get into the actual Black 2 game, but these warmup writings are all set in past games. I'll probably be going over the more dramatic deaths and exciting battles of HeartGold while I wait. Antleer's tale was definitely one of my favorite moments of HeartGold, if only for the surprising tactics of the gym leader AI.

Posting to watch.

And what will you do with those items you received? Box them, trash them right away, or ignore them as if you only had a berry pouch? And are items like fishing rod and evolutionary stones also forbidden? Also, will you limit the number of pokéballs per town, or the type of pokéballs you use? And will you catch more when your team is already full, that is, live pokémons in box? Just curious.

Items that I receive but cannot use will remain in my bag, because I'm interested to see how much free shit the game gives me that I don't need. I'll be using key items where appropriate. Evolutionary stones will be used if necessary, but I don't think many Unova Pokemon even need them. I'll probably not have any Pokemon that needs one long enough for this to matter.

I technically didn't mention Pokeballs before, but I will be buying those. Pokeballs and 'special' balls like the Dusk Ball or Net Ball have always been my preference, since I feel Great Balls and Ultra Balls cheapen the others somewhat. If I am somehow lucky enough to have more than 6 Pokemon alive at a time (Something that basically never happens until right at the end in every Nuzlocke I've done before), they will go in the PC to be withdrawn later if there are casualties. The low Unova route count and high expected mortality rate mean that this is very unlikely.

Obviously, level-grinding is mandatory.

Not necessarily so since the only source of PP outside mandatory healing would be leppa berry. A balance would have to be struck, with sacrifaces made since specific berries are not readily available in Unova.

EDIT: A similar run in Hoenn, Sinnoh or even HGSS Johto would have been that much easier as long as berry farming is not forbidden.

Exactly. If this were Hoenn, such a challenge would be laughable - just go to the Berry Master's yard and plant 20 trees. Harvest each 12 hours for infinite money. A lot of these rules are to prevent gratuitous grinding - making me require strategy to succeed.

Are you trying to inform me about the built-in nurses and doctors and whatnot? I'm aware of those. That's why I won't be using Pokemon Centers. I've not played through Black 2 before, so hopefully I won't know when a restoration point is coming up in the story. If they're repeatable, I won't be using them more than once.

Nah, when you hit plot, people will heal you sometimes. Well, most of the time to be honest.
I hope this is lessened somewhat in Challenge mode, then. We'll see how that goes.

No major story today, but a picture that took me a ludicrously long time to make. Broulder the Mighty was essentially my starter in HeartGold, as Craquadile the Totodile died pretty early on. He was one of three Pokemon to survive the majority of the run. He was about the 3rd Pokemon I caught, and never left my team. His favored items were Rindo and Passho berries, continuously supplied by my mothers' rampant item purchasing with my earnings. With those, he survived a few otherwise certainly fatal x4 effective water and grass moves.

One of my favorite moments in any Pokemon game thus far was in Blackthorn city, having just come out of the tunnels. Broulder was walking with me, being first in my party. He kept turning to the north when I stopped, facing towards the peaks. I turned to him and pressed A, wondering if he had an item or something. He let out his mighty Graveler cry (it really is quite a gravelly noise) and I got the message, "Broulder is staring longingly at the mountains!" or something to that effect. It was really something I didn't expect, that they would have a mountain-dwelling Pokemon long to be in the mountains. I really wish that Black and White had carried over the walking Pokemon feature.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Still missing some highlights, but much better than the last attempt.
