"Internet Native" annoys me, as it describes people who only use the surface of the 'net that's been built and prepared for them; not someone like me who can code an transparent HTTP proxy server in assembly for the kit computer hand wired into the twisted pair cable inside someone's wall to intercept and forward their internet communications.

And put some pants on.

How did you learn to do stuff like that? Self-taught or degree?

Pants are tricky.

I think we have a disconnect. Helgo may be right about such things - in Germany. But here in America, things are very different.
Not really. The older of my little brothers is getting an education as varnisher, the younger one as IT specialist. The first one requires working with hazardous materials all the time, the latter one comes down to being lucky with your genes. Guess who earns more right now and who'll also earn more in the future.
To top it off: I now work part-time as a software tester and earn more than either of them – not only per hour, mind you.
My big brother worked in a children's home and earned almost nothing, while he had to endure the children's violent tendencies while not being allowed to fight back (which he himself sees as right).

Hard work doesn't earn you squat here either. Being lucky enough to like and be capable of the kind of work that's done in prestigious jobs gets the money. If you don't have that but really want the money you are better ethically bankrupt.

mix of self, school, and corporate training; I could do each of those steps, but I've never done them together in that way =)

Am I the only one who read this as "getting an education as a vanisher"? It certainly made the rest of your post, especially the part about dealing with hazardous chemicals regularly more ominous. In before SS police! :P

Throw in some definition here guys. Do you identify best with your generation, or locality, or hobby? What are people your age into?

Generation a little bit, similar views and interests a lot. Other people my age, though? It depends. Some are pretty similar to me, while others are strange alien creatures that I do not understand.

Okay. I'm itching a bit to start self-teaching because at the moment A-level computing is teaching me toss-all.

I see these parts to "my generation":
1. The misanthropes. They complain a lot about how fucked up society and almost everyone in it is, expecting the end of humanity in the next century.
2. The neo-hippies/neo-punks, normally either wondering whether they are wrong to not believe all that awful crap "normal" people throw at them or wondering whether they are wrong for being less/more optimistic than their predecessors. Also they are firmly convinced that everybody is more or less secretly having self-image problems, with the worst offenders being those who deny the loudest.
3. The dedicated democratic normal people, who are convinced that our governments might be  little bit crazy at times, but generally have figured out this "politics" thing they hear about all the time and now it's only a question of the details.

I'm being facetious, of course.
