...and the fact that we can't trust forumites to have a rules-compliant thread for a dang-fangled kids show about ponies- one which I am rather fond of- without the thread derailing into entirely inappropriate territory makes me very sad.

It's all about self-censorship and respecting boundaries. Two of the cornerstones on which Bay12 is built.

Did that thread even have rules? I can't remember, honestly. Mainly because I never looked at them.
Maybe just a Bay12 RP thread would be better? It would probably evolve into some kind of sitcom or other.

If such is done, it would be good to put in rules against summoning eldritch abominations and the like (no offense), because that is what freeform roleplay on this forum often devolves into. People just keep introducing crazy nonsense every post so that there's no normalcy left for the craziness to have an impact on.

Now, if there was some sort of system that limited the introduction of crazy elements to only once every so often...

People learn but groups of people don't, thats my quess why stuff like this happens again again and again. All it takes is one person really.

I'm quite happy that I stopped reading the shipping thread before seeing anything crazy.

What do you mean by RP threads? There have been plenty of RP threads made in Forum Games and Roleplaying that have run their course without being locked. If there were RP threads made in General Discussion that were locked, that only makes sense since they were made in the wrong section.
