War for the Overworld

Anyone seen this yet?

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/subterraneangames/war-for-the-overworld

They're trying to make a "spiritual successor" to Dungeon Keeper.

I, for one, wholeheartedly approve of this. Hope they actually meet their goal and make something decent.

What is with these dungeon keeper esk games and their obsession with making entire First person game modes?

I mean... the original Dungeon keeper had some pretty first person levels but they were always either a secret level or a part of a mission.

I never cared much for the first person stuff. I'm here to build a dungeon and order minions around, I don't need first person for that!

It's moderately fun to wander the halls of your dungeon as a novelty, but that's about it.

Wow... there appears to have been a mass upsurge of DK 'spiritual successors'

I wonder how small the parts of DK's spirit is, given the amount of times it'll have been split for all of these.

Considering how far off the mark Dungeons was, I'm hoping this one gets enough from DK and DKII to actually be good.

The biggest thing going for it right now, for me, is no fucking tongue in cheek shit.  Video game developers are as a general rule incapable of subtlety, so it's tough for them to make an "evil" game that doesn't take things way too far (See: Manhunt).  It seems like most people go the other route and make things a joke.

It looks like for once we might get a mature look at being an evil villain.

I dunno; looks a bit bland. Then again, even if it is just a DKII clone with sacrificial rituals and a talent tree, I guess that might be worthwhile.

Also, ooh, mod support.

Doubt it. You cannot make a mature game about being a evil villain because being an evil villain isn't mature. It is a very silly thing in concept.

It is why you see them in childrens cartoons but never in anything more adult then that outside of slasher villains.

I think it's just the term "Evil Villain".  No one ever classifies themselves as Evil or a Villain.

Maybe Maniacal Despot, or Tyrant, or something.  But Evil Villain does have too many silly connotations attached to it, even if it does mean the same thing.

I think an evil protagonist could work, so long as he wasn't Stupid Evil and had good reasons for what he was doing. Above Good and Evil would work, so long as the goal is lofty enough to commit acts others may perceive as evil. I'd actually be interested in playing a bad guy who doesn't apply common morals to his actions. He doesn't flaunt his 'evilness', or even acknowledge that he's evil, but he knows that others perceive him that way. What he does, though, he does for his own purposes, and will see his ends as good despite others' small minded misunderstandings. Evil is just a meaningless word to him. He may even work with the "good guys" if their goals coincide.

Oddly, the only villain like that I can think of in popular media is from Watchmen.

Reminds me of a D&D character I've been wanting to play...

Also yeah, forgot to mention that their stretch goals suck. "Let's tack on some weird different gametypes!"

I mean, I know at some point there's just nothing left to do, or at least nothing that won't break everything else and require massive further investment, but most of them really do sound like meaningless fluff, especially if they're going to be releasing modding tools anyway. I find it hard to believe there's not going to be anything they could do to improve the game beyond adding a first person dungeon crawler to it.

On the bright side, I suppose it's possible that branching out will improve the main game some, ie if they decide that the moba thing needs a better exp system which they can then adapt to the main game somehow. Not particularly holding my breath, but it's a possibility.

Isn't this most villains who don't explicitly revel in their evilness?
