Okay, so this session was just a fight. Last session had a somewhat half-hearted journal due to the possibility of retcons. And before that, we were still mid-fight with all those other nobles. So it's time to bust out the secret weapon of roleplayers: Backstory!

I finally made it.

I finally beat them. For two years, I've been sneaking around after dark, telling everyone I was honing my affiliation with the shadows while keeping the guards on their toes. Sometimes I had to deliberately give myself away to make sure they were able to find me every time. And then, when I decided it was no longer a game, I didn't tell them. Now 'Zak is lying behind the guardhouse (one of the few blind spots in the guards' patrol routes), and Mari fell into a grove of bushes when I shoved her off the wall. Their corpses and my disappearance are the only evidence of my escape... but Master Veshnoal will have pieced it together by noon, at the very latest. After that, it won't be too hard for them to guess I'd just flee to the nearest Human town.

So I've got to leave by midafternoon... and not only that, I need to be moving fast enough that they won't catch me. I heard one of the merchants saying he'd be leaving town shortly after noon... and one way or another, I'm going with him. Either as an escort or as a stowaway. Failing that, I'm stealing a horse... I don't have enough money to buy one. My destination is the capitol. It's a big enough city that even if they figured out I was there, it would take them too long to find me, and it would be difficult to capture me quietly. Once there, I'll take a job as... I don't know for sure. Something that involves travelling would be best. Maybe I'll be a professional caravan escort. Mercenary-for-hire doesn't sound too bad. Even a job that involves the possibility of death is better than being locked in a metal sphere forever... or until I'm strong and bitter enough to be a usable weapon...

As for this book, they were selling it as a blank wizard's spellbook. I'm going to use it as a journal... assuming I don't burn it. Or at least this page, it's too incriminating to leave written that I planned an escape for two years. If the illumians somehow read it, they'll make sure to never underestimate me again. But I don't want to...

...I'll keep it. This first page will forever serve as my reminder as to why it's so important to be free. Painful as they are, I cannot afford to forget these memories. I'm never going to be a slave again.

Another successful mission. We are definitely getting better at this.

We went to a special plane, which was guarded by a large squad of the giant ants. These ones were apparently there for no reason other than to oppose us; there was nothing there but the ants and their mechs. The mechs were equipped with some very unique weapons... for instance, one could create small walls of ice and had a rotating saw for a weapon. I used some of the force grenades on one, since I couldn't have hoped to damage it with my normal weapons... Dorf hopped inside, tore the pilots to pieces, and then I took it over. It wasn't hard to use, although the ants apparently use scent as well as sight to relay information. This made it somewhat annoying to figure out what was going on outside the mech, not to mention it smelled bad. Oh well. I can pilot them.

The King showed up in person to congratulate us, and to explain that the nobles under him are all given access to an extraplanar reserve of power, which usually ends up with them trying to take more of it from others, and use it on peasants to prevent uprising. Apparently we have millenia of civilization's advancement locked away in a library somewhere, but can't release it for fear of nobles' infighting becoming too devastating.

...Makes sense to me. My first thought upon hearing about that library was, "I wonder how much stronger I could make my powers if I had access to that library." Apparently holding the title of Baron makes me fairly close to making that thought a reality. I don't necessarily intend to make war with my powers, though. Only to protect myself...

Appended: My daily regimen is starting to pay off. I came up with a new way to use the shadows. It's a bit like a quicker version of the ritual I performed on myself, in that it replaces part of the target's flesh with shadows. If you do it to certain muscles instead of their whole body though, and ignore the soul completely, the only noticeable effect is that they get weaker. I can also choose to use it on their heart and respiratory organs, but unfortunately I can't do both when I'm doing such minute targeting.

I'm going to make sure I do use up my shadow powers every day to ensure I don't get out of practice, but for now I'm switching devoting some of my daily training regimen to studying my Dark Candle. Not to reproduce its ability to create darkness, but to create its fire. I want to know why it burns cold.

I don't want to make war, I just want to kill everyone else who does. Wait... hm.

YES. We, or at least I, have more than once been so caught up in a game that I started to forget about other things.
