I suggest heavy armor and light weapons. Our gladiators will not be outrunning jungle cats, and when a lion is on you I think you want a short, fast weapon rather than a long weapon. For example, good luck trying to stab a lion with a spear when the lion is gnawing on you.

Isith's club is probably a poor choice since it requires a swing. Brutus's trident is too long range.

...probably better do gladius + trident or gladius + melee javelin then. Don't want to be stuck with only a short sword if they decide to throw a hippopotamus or something at us. Want to pair the gladius with a long weapon that can act like a pike for big heavy things to impale themselves on.

We can give Isith a sword and train him to use if a lion gets inside the club's range. And we should plan on sending Nero to sneak into the beast pits with sedative just before our guy fights.

You end up purchasing the following for Aquila, deciding it would be useful for him in the pit game. After the pit games, you will need to train someone for the Animal Pit arena match, which will follow up in five weeks. Plenty of time.

Aquila now has light armor, a steel gladius, and two bronze javelins. You are still debating on what to supply Isith for the brawl tomorrow night.

((I forgot to mention when the animal game was, but it's not for 5 weeks, so preparing for that would be less effective than preparing for tomorrow's match.))

Should he fight Isith gets a Steel Club, Bronze Helm, and Medium Armor. Instruct him to send a message by crushing his foe's legs should he win.

Get Brutus some respectable clothes and invite him to attend the games with you and your party. Ask his opinion of things and act like you value what he says. Later on ask Bascus if the man knows what he is talking about.

Also, while you are there, learn about the other lesser schools on the pit circuit.

We should deck out Isith in all heavy armour, steel helm and steel club.

We should still look out for a Gallic translator in order for us to find out what weapon Isith used to use.

I'd say its a bit late to change his style for the fight tomorrow.

Perhaps Lynx would be better suited to this challenge. The Animal Pit seems a bit risky, and his expendability ferocity would be useful in such an unsure match.

You end up buying heavy armor, a steel club, and a steel helm for Isith.

After buying the equipment for your warriors, the total comes to 1,750 Denarii.

You have 8,250 Denarii left.

Upon the day of the fight, you leave the school in charge of Bascus while you take four guards along with you and Isith and Aquila, in order to make sure they don't pull any funny business, or that someone tries to sabotage your warriors.

You learn the possible lineups for the fight, there are currently two other gladiators that don't have a match. Tacitus, and Vitus. Tacitus has a similar combat style to your own Isith, being large and slow. He wields a trident and a small shield. Vitus is an average-sized gladiator that works well at range with several throwing spears that can be used in melee in a pinch. He also has a small buckler upon his left arm.

You have to match your gladiators to those two, but which one will they fight?

Isith vs. Tacitus.
Aquilas vs. Vitus

Yes. Lets prove our schools superiority by having our warriors take on people in the same weight class.

((Sorry, was busy today.))

You set the roster up so Aquilas fights Vitus, and Isith shall fight Tacitus. The gladiators are taken to small rooms away from the rest of the crowd, and you look around at the disgusting dredges of human kind that are almost nearly as barbaric as the warriors who will fight here today.

You will eventually work your way up, but you dare not touch any alcohol lest you go blind and start withering. Your guards stand close, eyeing the crowd cautiously as you walk up to a balcony where you can oversee the arena. You take a seat, and the guards take posts around you, and you wait.

The first round is a built, medium-sized man with a vicious looking whip and claw-like weapon on his other arm versus a somewhat smaller man with a curved dagger and small shield. The fight begins slowly, and the inexperience of the smaller man soon becomes evident. In minutes, the poor soul is riddled in cuts and tears, and with a mighty boot to the face, he is knocked out of the ring, tumbling onto the crowd of people below.

And that is how the matches progress for the next few hours, either horrendously one-sided, like the one you saw first, or very bloody, very evenly matched to where even you get excited for the eventual outcome. But eventually, it comes time for Isith to face his foe. You can only sit back and hope that Bascus' training would serve the large man well.

------------------------------------
Perspective Change: Isith

You struggle to bring your ample form onto the top of the ring, where your opponent sits, his trident braced against the floor. Gripping your steel club tight, you can only hope that this armor will be able to shrug off the blows from that trident.

You and your opponent take your respective places at the ends of the ring, waiting for the bell that would announce for the fight to begin. It's an agonizing wait, and you and your opponent stare each other in the eyes, one trying to intimidate the other. You can hear the yells and shouts and boos of the nearby drunken crowd, but you shrug them off, for they are no matter.

Suddenly, the bell rings out. DING-DING-DING! And Tacitus lunges forward with his trident, seeking to impale you through the throat. You were too slow to try and get the first strike, and now have to act defensively, and the armor will surely be a help with that. Time seems to speed up, and you quickly deduce the only option to try and protect your neck from unwanted ventilation would be to try and dodge, or parry the strike.

Parry. Grab shaft of trident with left hand, pull him into us as we bludgeon him with the club in our right hand. Don't let get of the trident.

I'm fairly sure our club is two handed, and our armor is too restrictive for something impressive like that.
