Feminism was just the focus of study more upon the largely neglected female population, not even nescessarily 'equality'.  Studies would often exclude or mitigate feminine influence altogether.  Imagine taking a political poll and only asking men their opinion.

What it turned into was an attempt to counterbalance years of subservience by fighting fire with fire. . .

You don't like the concept of individuals being judged by their individual attributes rather than by arbitrarily assigned gender roles?

Feminism was, originally, an equality thing, but people started using it as an excuse for all sorts of stuff. Overall, we ended up with the stuff we have today.
