Always during early part of fortress establishing, mostly for beds and wooden pots. Though I like to make a lot of wooden block for staircases ( still using 34.09, so I need light blocks for stairs to not clobber my dwarves to death on deconstruction ).

I don't typically run much metal industry so I get overabundance of wood once my fortress' population's stablizied and not growing much. I don't usually find magma until pretty late in fortress, or never before I stop playing on the particular fort, because I don't dig down as much as I digs horizonally :D

I suppose if I'm going to run a fully industralized fortress, I would be more strapped for wood, even with magma, since wood's more useful than metal for pots and certain other applications, or even just for fertilizing fields.

what you mean, don't know what to do with wood?!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

it has 3 floors + deck + lowest floor stores lava which it can fire out of 6 cannons (volcano + pumps)
embarked in a densly forested area, cleared it several times, as I only wanted to use brown wood.
story to the ship:
- embark, set everything up, fend goblins off
- trap corridor built including shotgun and magma cleaning from a volcano
- ok, I've got much wood, what to do with it?
- build ship, test it, half the world burns (other half is mountain)
- ???
- profit!  8)

edit: spoilered large pic

I once had a dragon burn down my heavily wooded forest. Was out for a season then loads of trees had grown again. I had two caverns which where completely flooded and one which was empty except for few shrubs.

I've been out of wood ever since I took a liking to tundra forts. Generally I can get about 40 logs for one master crafted stone craft though, so the wood I being on embark is enough to last till the traders arrive.

Indeed, you have. Now for the next challenge, installing some props and a power source to it (feel free to apply my methods, especially to make convincing props and boilers), and making it fly. Can it compete against my ship? 5 decks tall, 2 balistae below.

While building mine, I had imps burn my tree farms down a few times, and collecting in the outlands was dangerous, as there were antmen and giant birds all over the freaking place. Took longer to build than I wanted; but did help establish a good story.

I use a RIDICULOUS amount of wooden cages.

Also, 1 bed per dwarf, i quite often make furniture out of wood due to carpenters being legendary cos of excessive cage building.

I will often ORDER more wood, i will have cut down every piece of wood on the surface and in the first level of caverns. I will also have a "farming area" 1-3 z levels from the surface, where there is massive areas of soil/peat for more trees to grow for me to farm.

On my current fort, i have ~120 cage traps, 30 cages with stuff in, 60-80 dwarves which need beds.
I also have cripples requiring crutches and stuff because the mod i'm using i am unfamiliar with and i'm getting slapped around by the locals.

I generally make tables/chairs/doors out of stone though. On one of the graphic packs, the doors in wood looked AWFUL.

Lastly, i exceedingly rarely get a magma forge, as i generally embark where magma is 100 z levels down and it's too annoying to get to, i just use my wood farming abilities to get all the charcoal i could ever need.

So yes, not only do i use up a lot of wood, i go to lengths to get even more and still quite often run out. I need to stop relying on surface wood though as goblin ambushes are starting to really be a pain in killing wood cutters and my hunters whom are training marksdwarf as i find it's one of the easiest and possibly best ways to train (apart from they get killed by gobbos :P )

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

In one fort I assumed I would run out of wood, had a 11x11 stockpile, and an associated QSP that I unloaded the stockpile into when it got full.  Ordered all the wood I could from traders.  After playing like this for a number of years thought "oh, I wonder how much wood I've got" - over SIX THOUSAND logs.  No wonder the z-logs response time was starting to remind me of z-stone.

~120 cage traps
You may have no wood, but at least you have your back covered from almost everything.
By the way, no, I never ran out of trees... at least not after I breach the caverns.
I have the habit to put a large portion of my initial industries and temporary stockpiles in the first z-level (which usually is soil), then dig down to rock and planning out my definitive fortress there.
As my forts mostly extend vertically, I usually breach the caverns while diggning the nth bedroom complex, and once that happens I have to either orderly relocate everything in the stone layers or have mushroom-trees growing all over the place.
Incidentally, this means I get a big free tree farm.

I have done it occasionally. I always forgot to turn my commands at workshops off of "R"

I run out of wood all the time. I absolutely, positively HAVE TO smelt ALL magnetite and turn it into steel without the use of magma.

I'm always short on wood. The only reason I tolerate the elven traders is they (ironically) bring tons of wood. I order it from the mountainhome as well. I like terrifying embarks, so the surface is pretty much off-limits for civilians, even getting traders inside alive can be tricky, also caverns tend to be full of forgotten beasts. And even with magma forges, you need some wood for charcoal for steel (I rarely get coal/lignite), plus beds, bins, etc. (thank god for stone pots, I needed easily 2x as much wood in the barrel days). Edit: and siege weapons! Almost forgot. Wood's absolutely necessary for siege weapon parts and ballista ammo, last I checked.

I guess there's always the 'mine out a z-level for a tower cap farm' method, but that just seems.. I dunno, cheesy? Elven? I prefer getting it the hard way, by risking death on the surface/caverns or struggling to get traders inside alive.

On surface builds I tend to have to rely on wood, both for the furnaces and for building purposes. On undervround maps, if I can't reach magma conveniently I rely on undervround farms for wood. The main lroblem with these undrground farms is often how much they add to tbe fps due to pathfinding.
