Have you ever ran out of trees?
« on: November 11, 2012, 07:24:26 pm »

I'm just looking at my massive forests and just started to wonder, has anyone ran out of trees and had to buy wood or something?

Out of surface wood? TO THE CAVERNS!
...Out of cavern wood? What the hell are you doing?

More seriously, wood usage in my fortresses is practically non-existant, only really used for beds and bins (which are only used for metal bars, most of the time) since I use magma-powered workshops and tend to have a never-ending supply of cheap metal in the form of pointy objects trying to kill me.

That doesn't count, they didn't have any in the first place.

I did use up all my surface wood once. My 40*40 stockpile was full of wood... Also cleaned the safe caverns out too

What could you possible use that much wood for? Or do you just like having full stockpiles of things?

I'm always strapped for wood when I do no digging embarks, even in forests.  My castles will be amazing, even if they aren't made of stone

I always have trees to chop, just not necessarily wood. Dwarves are often busy. I never run out, even if building something out of wood. Mostly because I cycle through the area cutting a bunch of trees at once for no particular reason, ergo when I eventually make alot of things out of wood (as opposed to early on when beds and cheap stuff to sell is needed) I always have more then enough.

Trees grow back.  That said, don't think of buying wood as something you do only because you've run out of trees to log.  When caravans carry wood, it's so cheap, you'd be a fool not to buy them out.  I can typically trade one used, badly worn, dirty sock for all of the wood that an elven caravan can carry.  Why wouldn't I?

I pretty much cleared a forest and some worth's of trees. So for the most part of 5 Dwarf years supplemented by the caravans that used to come, no wood constraints were in effect. Lots of bins, beds and miscellaneous junk later - suddenly I find myself with less logs than I embarked with.
Worst comes to worse, the booze stockpile is floored with 10x10 of logs, an emergency supply in case of strange mood/bed demand.

Not since I learned that saplings won't take root, or grow into adult trees, on tiles that don't have at least 1 z-level of dirt below them. I once dug out my entire map's z-level -1 to get some quick & easy stockpile space, then spent the rest of the game wondering why the trees on z-level 0 weren't growing back.

Ran out of once, as I had 0 coal on the embark and all magma-areas were infested with one or two forgotten beasts.

In the end I decided to dig out 3 whole layers and make them a tree farm. Unfortunately the game became extremely laggy at this point and went down to 5 fps. Path calculating at it's best, seriously!
