Pixel art.
« on: November 10, 2012, 10:18:22 am »

I like pixel art. Not only for the 'retro' feel, reminiscent of some of the greatest games ever, but also for the minimalism feel. Expressing something with only blocks of color can be a bit of a challenge, but can look great. To this end, I sometimes try to draw a little. To improve my skills, I am going to try and draw one a day. Might sometimes be something very quick, but at least one thing every day.

Nice art man, I like the atmospheric perspective in alien landscape and blue hills. What program do you use if you don't mind me asking?

Graphics Gale: Free edition.
Although I'm pretty sure I could do this in paint, as the only tools I ever use are the pen and flood fill. Gale is nice because right click is color select, and that makes life a little easier.

I wonder if there are any art programs that also allow for palette cycling like with some of the images on that one guy's site?

There is Grafx2. You can set a portion of the palette to cycle, adjust the speed and preview what it looks like, although the documentation warns that most file formats don't save these settings and very few image viewing programs will play them back. I guess it's mostly useful if you're writing a game or something, since then you get to directly control the code that displays the images. I remember this platformer where the engine was constantly cycling a certain range of the palette, for simple but neat animations.

Does it work well, Soad?
Also, most importantly, is the color picker bound to the right mouse click?

Also, also, todays is up. Inspired by a game I kind of feel like making.

Sorry, no. :(
Color picker is a separate tool, so even if you adjust the keys you still need a minimum of two keystrokes to use it, first to select it and then click on the image. Maybe even a third to reselect the previous tool. Kind of annoying. Being able to bind it to right mouse (or middle mouse, or even CTRL-click like in GIMP) would be really convenient.

Wow, lovely!  I, too, think

Alien Landscape.
and

Blue hills.

are fantastic.  Blue Hills is just plain evocative and moody.  Alien Landscape looks like it belongs in some game, like Cave Story or the original Lemmings.  It also looks like it could become a very spooky graveyard with a tiny edit, and in fact I thought it was such when I first glanced by.

It is interesting that those two seem popular. That sort of style really doesn't take much time to produce. The tree in hills was a bit tricky and I had to redo it once or twice, but the rest of it was all as straight forward as it gets.

EDIT: Also, todays is up. Tried using the same style in a sightly new way.

Wow, while some other ones were honestly pretty quick work, todays took ages! Pretty much ripping offInspired by the works of Paul Roberson.
