I disagree, the circle is incredibly symmetric while the rectangle... is not. Well I mean it has rotational symmetry but it just looks kinda... zig-zaggy.

Making Puerto Rico a state sounds good to me.

I think the circle is far and beyond the coolest arraignment of the stars. Plus it is reminiscent of Earth's shape, which is a good thing to symbolize in the modern, interconnected world.

We've used rectangle for a while now, but it's kind of boring.

What if we arranged the stars to make a bigger star?

The circular arrangements remind me a little too much of the Earth flag from Futurama. Those of us not in the states might not be so keen on the implied link between the USA and the whole Earth.

I think we should go balls to the wall and turn that part of the flag into one of those eye puzzles.

"How... how many stars are there?"

"They say 51. That's the official number. No one can actually tell anymore."

We could use a photograph of an actual patch of the night sky that happens to have 51 visible stars in it.

That would actually encourage people to get the space program back up!

...maybe.

I like the large star visible in the circle one.  i guess you could say it implies some "central" star or state is most important though.

Bah, Furturama and symbolism all be damned, it is still the coolest looking flag, I say!

I like this idea too. It would even still fit the blue/white scheme if taken properly. Though Brazil might call us a copycat.

Actually just change the pattern every year to stimulate the flag printing industry.  Make the old ones into clothes for the poor.

The yearly contest would be decided on a web vote, and would thus also stimulate the online trolling industry.

Instead of 51 stars, 51 pictures of moot's face.

Maybe the circle will grow on me, but for the more traditionally minded, there's this

(I'm actually surprised noone brought this one up yet)

...californias still a state and all its got going for it is oil and dumb actors...

Oh, and also we're the 9th largest economy in the world and our taxes pay for your government.

I think we should go with the different rectangle. Similar but different, that's all it needs to be.
