Why one of them? Why not...all of them?

...
Because I wanted some mooks to be left for us, so I could maul a few of them violently. Whoa, I need to take cleave. That would make my bearform utterly terrifying in big brawls.

Also, I think we should surround the fortress with random puddles and ponds and shit, and a big moat. So that water overfill thing will come in handy. Also, lot's of cold and electric damage traps.

So, for those interested, here is a 1 pixel=4 inch scale map of the Cheap Keep that Wrex indicated we might maybe be getting:

Hans, cold climate. The maot thing is a good idea if we can keep the water as a liquid though.

And we CAN actually purchase a lead-lining for the castle walls. Only it costs a thousand GP per stronghold space. We'd need a LOT of money for that to work...

I mean with the reverse truename thing. What are you going to be reversing to do what to where and why?
I could take Word of Drowning, which normally robs a creature of its ability to breathe water, but when reversed gives a creature the ability to breathe water (and a swim speed). I was trying to decide between that (which would make me even more of a "misc. utility caster," or taking an utterance which would make me better at combat.

This. :P Besides, it being a cold climate would only make it better. The water rises, soaking the enemy. They take cold damage from the water. They get out of the water, take MORE cold damage from it being freezing. Then we bust out and start killing the weakened mooks.

So we surround the Keep area in 5x5 potholes filled with water, and flat land (If we put the water on elevated terrain, it's going to stand out. Plus water from nowhere.)

Also, Wrex, a map of the area would be nice.

Edit: And Stronghold Builder's Guide is now my one of my favorite D&D 3.5 books. Why? Because it has humor in it. A single quote:
Quote
The chapter begins with something simple, the kind of cheap (read: “inexpensive”) keep that many characters aspire to own when starting out

I'm almost finished updating my character sheet. I'll know once I know how much, to use the colloquial term, loot I received by the end of the previous session.

You're not thinking big enough. We're in a swamp. We just go find some quicksand and have it shoveled into the holes if we want some.

Also, being a geologist, I have done some ciphering and come up with the following figures:

The angle of repose for a material is the angle at which piles of that material taper down at. This happens to be equal to the angle at which a shoreline made of that same material sinks under the water. The angle of repose for clay and clay loam (as found in most swamps) is 15 to 30° If we assume a conservative estimate of 30°, this means that every 1 foot increase in depth equals a 1.75 foot increase in radius. So 1 cubic square of water (or quicksand!) turns into a pool 2d4+1 squares across and then freezes solid over the course of about six hours.

Okay, we put our castle on a foundation of Immovable Rods set in concrete (or stone, more likely) and then surround it in water. Water that looks like ground, of course.

Question: Where would we get magic items like that in a fairly low-mage setting?

Simple, level up and go from there. Maybe miscellaneous reagents could be a quest.

Incidentally, I don't think anyone told me if I got any loot after the pick.

If I recall correctly, there was a sword, a suit of chainmail and a bow. Plus the pick, spool of wire and 6 Alchemist's fires that we looted from the graves.
