I want some practice with running some kind of civilizationey game before Feudalism starts, so here it is.
-----
You are the head of a small group of islanders. Recently, you and several others were on the seas when one of the recent freak storms blew you far off-course. You awoke on an island you have never been to before. You soon asserted yourself as the leader and prepared for your new life.
TRIBE CREATION:
You need two things to post a tribe: A brief description of your group's leader, and traits you choose.
Your group's leader needs a name and a brief description of who s/he is and why s/he came to power. It can be anyone in the group, but given the culture you need a good reason to make a woman your leader and a better one to make a child lead them. No tribes will be accepted any longer; we're at quota for now.
Traits are things you have or found that either help or hurt your group. You start with two points, but can get more by picking traits which negatively affect your tribe. Many traits can be taken multiple times.
Positive Traits: These traits add points.
Dogs: You start with two dogs. Unless otherwise requested, they are one male and one female. Dogs can be used for companionship, protection, or an emergency food source. Two points.
Pig: You start with a pig. Pigs are useful as food, mostly. Two points.
Chickens: You start with two more chickens. Chickens can be eaten or kept for eggs, and their feathers can be made into cloaks. One point.
People: Your little group has more people than the base number. One point gets two men, three women, or four children.
Central: Your landing site is near the others', making your group a potential trade hub. One point.
Defensible: The site you land at has cliffs, makatea, or other features which make it hard to attack. Two points.
Rich Forest: The forest near your landing site is abundant in animal and plant life. All attempts at gathering food or wood from the forest have 25% greater yield, rounded up. Two points.
Good Beach: The beach you wound up on was unusually good. It's easy to land there, and attempts at gathering shellfish are at +1. One point.
Mine: A good source of basalt or obsidian is nearby. One point.
Negative Traits: These traits give you additional points.
Fewer People: Your group starts with only ten men and five women. Three points.
Minimal People: Your group starts with five each of men and women, and no children. Four points.
No Chickens: You do not start with any chickens. One point.
No Canoe: You do not start with a canoe, preventing you from fishing or travelling by sea until you make a new one. You also lack a net, but that's not much use without a canoe. One point.
No Tools: You do not start with a pick, adze, or chisel. Your knife is a shell one. Two points.
No Goods: No canoe, no tools, and no large pot or flint. Just a shell prier and a shell knife. Five points.
No Forest: You did not arrive on a part of the island with easily accessible forests. Two points.
Makatea: Your beach is surrounded by jagged, uplifted coral. Basically. This prevents gathering shellfish until you find a better beach. It also makes it harder to send canoes out to sea. Two points.
Inaccessible: Due to distance or intervening terrain, it is hard for your group to locate or trade with others. One point.
Indefensible: Features of the terrain prevent easy defense. Two points.
You need not spend all points, but there's no reason to do so except trying to inspire GM pity.
Every group starts out with the following, unless traits change it:
Fifteen men, ten women, and five children. This includes the leader.
Three hens and a rooster.
An average-sized but crude canoe.
A net, for fishing.
A shell prier, for prying shellfish off rocks.
A crude basalt adze, for cutting trees.
A crude basalt pick, for mining.
A flint, for fires.
An obsidian chisel, for cutting stone and such.
An obsidian knife, or perhaps a shell one.
A large basalt pot, for storage.
GAMEPLAY:
Each day, you need to assign work to your workers.
There are many jobs your people can do. For now, I'll only post some of the basic jobs and the tools they require.
Any adult can work, but due to a combination of their build and culture women have more limited ranges of work. Any task not marked with an asterisk will give women a -1 to if they do it, until they get fairly skilled at it. This is not intended to be sexist; IRL, most cultures' women did little but keep house and watch the children.
Fishing: People go out to sea to catch fish. It's fairly average, and requires a canoe and a net. The canoe you start with is big enough for one or two fishermen, although the second takes a -1 penalty.
Gathering Shellfish*: Another way to get food. Shellfish yield slightly less food than fish but make up for it with shells. Requires a prier.
Gathering Fruit*: Yet another way to get food, fruit yields less food than fishing, although more than shellfish, but has less of a chance of sharks. It requires no tools.
Collecting Eggs*: The hens will lay a few eggs every day, and if they aren't collected they can't be eaten. Doesn't require tools, either.
Hunting: Dangerous but potentially lucrative, food wise. It also brings bones, which are useful. You don't need tools, but a bow door other weapon is advisable.
Cutting Wood: What do you think it is? Requires an adze.
Gathering Wood*: Like cutting wood, but without using an adze. Mechanics-wise, it gives a -1 to the roll and halves your product after that.
Gathering Grasses or Reeds*: Grasses and reeds are useful for weaving stuff. No tools needed.
Collecting Clay*: Pretty much what it sounds like. Clay can be used for buildings or for pottery. No tools required, but shovels make it easier.
Starting or Watching a Fire*: A good idea to do at some point. Requires either a flint or another fire; eats one wood and two Grasses/Reeds per day.
Getting Water: Also important. If there isn't enough water, people won't be happy and will only be able to do half as much work. Thankfully, you have a nearby spring and probably a large pot to store water in. If you don't have any water fetched, not as much work can be done. Thankfully, one person usually brings enough water for everyone. Requires only a container to put the water in.
As time goes on, I'll post more things you can do. For the start, you'll probably want to stick to this.
CRAFTING:
Given how little you start with, crafting new tools and goods will be important. Here is a list of all crafts I feel you should worry about for now, as well as those asked for:
Product: What you make
Reagents: What you use up while making the object
Tools: What you need but do not use up while making the object
Times per Day: How many times the reaction can be done per day by a single worker
Women Trained?: Can women do the reaction without a penalty?
As I typically post from my tablet, it might be a while before this list is particularly comprehensive. Product | Reagents | Tools | Times per Day | Women Trained? |
Shell Adze | 5 Shell | Stone Knife | 1 | No |
Net | 15 Grass/Reed | 2 | Yes |
