Barth blinks and looks around. All is dark...Maybe someone cut off the ship's power. He takes out his trusty oil lamp and quickly lights it, the large flame projecting dancing shadows across the medical bay.

I've never had any problem seeing in the dark unless it's complete darkness. Also, Alan did check the controls shortly before so he would know where the buttons are.))
