Arcanum is an amazing game. A flawed gem however.

I will agree with that. It requires HUGE leaps and bounds of "Lets just ignore that" in order to enjoy... but is a game that is all the better for you doing so.

Like replaying a lot of REALLY old games with mind boggling terrible choices for UIs or inventories.

What I'm saying is I'm never buying anything from Kerberos ever again. So now another SoTS game with !Flexible Funding! is just a joke. Disgraced to live in the same city as the studio.
Lets play "Spot the good games."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But.. most of those games ARE good. I loved Homeworld and Cataclysm, Arcanum was amazing, the entire SOTS1 series is good.

Fort Zombie was much improved by post-release patching but is still a bit iffy. Much better than release though. SOTS2 is still being worked on, and they have patches on average once every two weeks.

Sword of the Stars 2 though is still... pretty bad... and not in the fixable sense.

I had a lot of fun with Bully too.
I rented it. It wasn't really my type of game.

I had a lot of fun with Bully too.

I still agree with its M rating though.

Given its whole "Hurting people is great!" in a relatable fashion.

Which I assume only aided its popularity.

Mind you, I didn't play it. It was just an arguement I got in on the forums before it was released.

Eh, I think age restricted entertainment is a bit of a silly thing in all cases.

I had a lot of fun with Bully too.
I rented it. It wasn't really my type of game.

That's okay.

I don't really consider M to be "Age restricted" more "At LEAST let your mom be aware of what you are playing"

No way! If I had let my mom know when I was a kid, I wouldn't have had any experience with the old Duke Nukem games, Grand Theft Auto, etc. They were awesome!

I know what you mean, though :P

i likes SotS1, was a pretty fun 4x and liked the different travel methods and lore too.
never played SotS2 as i still run on win xp and it requires win 7 or something... was pretty exited for it though, a shame it came out pretty messy...

regarding the actuall SotS rougelike:
from the looks of it it sounds similar to "hack slash loot" as they said
Quote
With The Pit, we'll deliver retro graphics, but give you the levelling, ammo, crafting and skills of a true dungeon dive. And of course, we set the action in our favourite playground, the SotSVerse!
i wonder why they dont go the more gfx route of "dungeons of dreadmor" as they have some nice sprites on the kickstarter web... (well nothing against pixel style games... i.e. "terraria" did it pretty good)

and
Quote
In this game, you play a brave Human soldier exploring a multi-level underground lab facility.
Quote
3 Characters to choose from…Marine, Pilot and Engineer!

they have the whole lore of SotS to work with... so why cant we chose one character of any SotS race and then pick one of the 3 classes?
why is it "limited" to humans?
what if i want to play a morrigi pilot that crashlanded on some planet and found this lab and now explores it?
with these special morrigi "awe" or something psycic power whatever it was that is written in their lore?

zool (? was it them?) might start with a slave you can order around...

well ok a liir character might be troubblesome as they need water or however they "walk/swim" around... well doubt they had any "water spacetank spacesuit" in their lore in sots...

if they use the SotS lore why dont they use all of it? well maybe they wire a story to it (but its a rougelike... doubt there will be much story anyways. its more about exploreing a dungeon/lab/ruin/town/whatever its future setting.. could be all sorts of dungeons... maybe liek "hack slash loot" does it with chooseing a "quest setting" at character creation).

atm i think this SotS rougelike could be "more" than it seems to be atm.
but 60000 $ doesnt seem to be that much.... just look at i.e. FTL... it turned out pretty awesome... who knows maybe this will turn out pretty good too?

The Pit Is Part of the Plan
Our plan is to start small and work our way to bigger things.

We want to develop a catalog of games which are completely independent and self-published. We're starting with small projects, games with smaller budgets and faster turn-around times.

Over time we'll build up to bigger, more ambitious games. Small projects like The Pit will teach us what we need to know about publishing and distributing our own games and merchandise.

Once we have a few successful self-published games under our belts, we'll be ready to launch something bigger and more involved, like Fort Zombie 2 or Northstar.

sounds liek they want to get experience with a bunch of smaller games for a bit and then return to bigger titles like a fort zombie 2...  maybe the SotS2 was a bit... "too big" for them to make it as "good" like they wanted and came out on the "buggy side of things" ?

I'd like them to succeed because I love SotS to bits but after what happened to SotS2, I lost confidence in them.
I played Sword of the Stars 2 and I honestly have no idea why the first game was considered good... at all.
The second is like the SLOWEST 4X GAME EVER!
Well perhaps not slower then Aurora but then again it isn't one set against another.
So you're making statements about SotS 1 while only having played 2. SotS 2 had quite a few things slowing it down compared to 1, mostly in the completely different fleet system.

On the contrary.

I mean... SotS2 is SOO Bad... soo slow... So needlessly mindnumbingly slow and terrible in how slow it is. That it creates a psychic barrier to even trying or being able to know why people liked the first.

It is the only 4X game I know where being 200 turns in can mean you havn't done anything yet.

I feel like I could play Sword of the Stars right now and no matter HOW fun it is, I'll be entirely bored just because of the connection. It is that bad.

Some maps, especially the large ones, intentionally give you no suitable planets anywhere near your location to slow your progress and prevent a mid game steam roll.
