Alrighty. I'll mark that down.

EDIT: Time to pick manger and Book keeper. If someone else wants to do the job, feel free to volunteer your dwarf.

Oh, and it seems mauling the tree humpers was the right course of action.

“Hey everyone! Look!” Mattock called from the entry to the food prep room. “What is it?” Splint asked, looking at the sack he was carrying. “Soap!” he said with a smile as he opened it, revealing a mess of soap bars. “I used the tallow from those beetles Wax and the others killed.” “Good man Mattock, this'll be good to have. Thank you.” Feral said while giving Mattock a pat on the back “You should thank whoever made the lye. I saw it sitting in an ashery and decided to toss up a soaper station and make use of it! I can make more if you'd like.” Mattock replied. “Good idea. In fact, Usi, would you mind extending the planned irrigation tunnel? I have an idea...” Feral drew rough plans, though it's need to be sealed to prevent water seepage, and to this end the group decided that they could churn out some coal and make bricks to seal it whilst the masonry crew went to work to finish paving over the irrigation tunnel, as Splint had begun asking when they would “Seek out the most dwarven of war beasts.” to which he meant begin their cavern missions that Corai's group had failed at Mineplunge. But their plans were for now, not then. A pool was dug to have water stored in it below ground with supports installed to ensure the elephants wouldn't come crashing through the weakened soil. “We've made it this far, what's a little indulgence in a small public bath?” Was Corai's response to the few dissenters of the group. A bath would do wonders, and so long as they were careful, they could also use it as an emergency storage of water for the winter freezeovers. Flood gates were prepared, as were numerous mechanisms to operate them, and pumps readied for the irrigation process to begin so they could sow their first crop. Splint was heard yelling at Usi to get his hands off the brass while he was working at this time, and Zinc had been building a small house for no apparent reason for months off and on, and insisted on a secondary tunnel to the river and refused to pave the main one until it was dug. Corai eventually reported that they were running low on raw stone, but they had enough to finish their plans.

Journal of Splint Twobust, Year Six. Exact date unknown, presumed to be mid-summer.

Feral noted we should have seen migrants by now, so it looks like the high elves kept their word. The gods have been merciful in keeping that witch Mona away from me. Lev also came into dinner looking rather irritable, and said some over grown rat swung on him with a cheap dagger. Slade asked if he was ok, Lev just told him he got a nasty bruise but the rat-thing scrambled across the log bridge Feral made months ago minus a tooth. That makes me wonder if we've already garnered attention from other less agreeable creatures besides petty thieves. We need those beasts.....

-

“Right then! Mill's done everyone!” Lev called a few days later as he got a windmill spinning. The millstone began to grind, calling for millables to be jammed into it. So far, everything was coming together nicely when they heard Usi called out “BUG BEAR! THERE'S A FUCKING BUG BEAR OUT HERE!” Everyone was startled, and the milita lept at the call, ready to run the beast down if it harmed Usi, but to their shock, Usi was attacking it, barehanded at that! He delivered one punch after another, though why he didn't have his pick was anyone's guess. The thieving brute tried to swat Usi away from it, but he instead grabbed it by the finger and actually managed to hold it in place, and delivered a punishing strike it it's side. The Bugbear, a beast of a thing compared to the dwarf, seemed noticeably harmed, and showed signs of labored breathing. Seizing the moment, Usi managed a flying tackle as it tried to run, though his fist missed and the beast kicked him in the stomach, Usi seemed unphased and continued to plow into the target, the two tumbling over each-other as he made the connection. Feral, who panicked at the though of another dwarf falling, started yelling at the top of his lungs as he ran to assist Usi. While Feral charged, Usi seized the bugbear by it's leather robes and delivered two crushing blows, the second resulting in an apparent sever injury to it's ribs or lung, based on the yowling coming from the would-be thief. Just as Feral got to where he could at least toss his axe at the monster, its cries suddenly ceased as Usi delivered a d double-fisted blow its head, blood and what appeared to be brain matter oozing out one ear. “Usi! Usi, are you ok?!” Feral said desperately. Usi stood over the fallen bugbear, and simply roared in victory, raising both fists above his head. “So.. Is that a yes or a no?” Feral asked, confused by the response. “Got a few bruises, but yeah, I'm... I'm fine. Doin' better than him.” Usi said as he kicked the dead cretin in the side of it's partially crushed skull. He then yanked the copper dagger from its grip that it had been unable to swing properly, simply muttering “Mine now, bitch.” Feral called up to Mantis and Mona that they needed to drag in the body, lest they invite a necromancer.

There was a small celebration held for Usi and his successful kill that night.

[So yeah! Had a few thives get spotted and Usi managed to bare-knuckle beat down the bigger of the two! Honestly I expected him to die and and went and crushed it's head. The merchants kept thier word and no migrants came this season, thank god. A small bathhouse is in the works, soap has been made, and come fall we should have our first crops in the ground!]

Still no migrants? Hmm...but you got a dwarven caravan, so that should mean that your parent civ should still be alive.

You're not mining much, right? That's probably it. The migrant calculations take into account how much of the map you can see/have explored. If I'm remembering correctly, anyway.

Yes, and I'm trying to figure out why he isn't getting any. That way he can help control how soon he gets them, and when he does want them it'll be easier for him to get them.

“Hey, Feral, wake up!” Skull said as he shook the sleeping woodsman awake. “Mmm..>W as-What is it Skull?” He gestured to the door. “Humans!” Feral blearily got to his feet and walked out, and sure enough there was a human leading a giant beetle laden with goods and a cage containing a duck into the stockade, followed by a second and humans could be heard coming down the large hill in their wagons. Suddenly there was shouting, and Ospery could be heard shouting obscenities.
-

“You aren't goin' anywhere motherfucker!” Osprey said angrily as he grabbed one of two kobolds as they attempted to flee. He grabbed it by its tail and slammed it bodily into the dirt, a feeble swing from it's dagger managing a light bruise, to wich Osprey responded with a leglock, going so far as to shatter the poor little creature's ankle. He let it go, but only long enough to grab it by the ear and slam it on it's back, where he began to slam his fist into its lower body, before grabbing its arm and smashing it's dagger-wrist, before delivering a crushing blow to it's temple, which smashed in far more more bone than it should. The other kobold, faced with dwarves carrying bags of heavy clay in one direction, and a steep hill to the north, tried to flee past, only for Osprey to perform a diving tackle and knock the kobold flat on its face. As soon as Osprey was up on his knees he began to snap every limb he could reach, breaking first it's left leg, then it's left arm,  before punching it in the spine and smashing it into the dirt repeatedly, it's cries getting more and more pathetic with each slam, until it lost consciousness when he punched it in the nose and shattered the bone, the piece managing to pierce its skull and drive into the kobold's frontal lobe. He grabbed their knives, saying as the humans showed up, shocked by the dwarf's ruthless execution of the kobolds, “Ah yes, these'll do just fine...”

-

“Corai! Lev! Come on, we got merchan- Splint?” “Making more goods.” Splint said flatly with an ingot of electrum. “Hail dwarf! We're friends of the dwarves who traded here ast fall. Got anything for us?” The lead human said as he offloaded the duck cage and packs of goods. “We most certainly do! Wait... Who's that?” Feral said before spotting something. “Silver Xelics. Nothing but a bunch of animal humping freakbugs. You request their presence?” Feral looked quite grim at the thought of more than who was intended to be here showing up.“No. Wax! You and the others are up! We have uninvited guests.” The settlement militia was swift and brutal, the humans cringing at the massacre of the silver xelics, limbs being sent flying and puddles of ichor forming under severed limbs and beetle bits. “What madness is this!? We come in pea-CACGHEHG!” One of the two xelics cried as a dagger was driven into it's body. By the time Usi had pulled the first blade out, Wax and Mantis had already viciously dispatched the other xelic and its pack beetle. Wax was particularly vicious, seeming to become a different person when he fought, using his pick to tear the second merchant apart before setting upon the remaining pack beetle with the others. It died of bloodloss rather quickly, and afterward the milita were told to rummage through the goods if they chose to. Mantis let out what could only be described as a squee of joy as she pulled a red falchion from one of the bags. “You know what that is dwarf?” Mantis shook her head, as she had grabbed it only because of it's color. “That there is elemental metal. Incindium. Looks like the freakbugs brought an incindium pick and a glacium one too. Good tools those.” A human soldier said. “Is that wrought iron?” Splint said, poking his head over Mantis' shoulder. “Y-” Splint cut mantis off with a sudden “GIMMIE!” before grabbing the bar and saying that he had to work it before Usi sees it, running off to the forge with it. “This'll make a fine beating stick.” was all anyone heard him say. Corai, meanwhile rushed to meet the merchants while Mantis handed over her brightsilver sword and took the falchion instead.

Nearly a day or so of work later, Lev approached Feral with the seasonal purchase report. “I think gutting those xelics was the right thing to do boss; made getting provisions far easier and it'll encourage trade with the humans come next year. I hope you don't mind, but I asked they send a diplomat with a list of what their home guilds can offer us.”  Feral took the list, and dismissed Lev, looking over the purchases....

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

“'Scuse me, sir, mind letting us stay a few more days? We could use a break from traveling.” One of the merchant guards asked. “Of course; you brought us much needed food and drink, so stay as long as you like. Just don't go picking fights with my people.” Feral said dismissivly. Mantis then asked for additional chopping space and to have Skull help her out with body processing. “His job revolves around the dead as much as mine, I think it's fair to ask he help me.” Feral waved her away, rubbing his head.“Something wrong boss?” Lev asked. “Bumped my head helping Zinc with her rediculous project. Pay it no mind. Corai get the main floodgate up yet?” Feral said, folding the purchase report up and putting it in his pocket. “Not yet boss, he's workin' on it now.” Lev said, gesturing to the merchant carrying a bundle of mechanisms and small axles. “Good, maybe we really will have crops sown by fall, or at least by next spring.”

A sudden yell for assistance broke a momentary calm: Usi had managed to hurt himself, slipping down a temporary ramp with a bag of clay, which landed on and shattered his leg. “Sit still Usi! We'll get you taken care of ok? Squid, what do we do!?” Mona said. Squid was the only one with even a cursory understanding anything's anatomy, but that only accounted for so much when she had no medical expierence. “Outta my1 We gotta get hi to the dorm!” Wax said, muscling the other dwarves from his path and picking up Usi. “Don't worry man, you'll be ok. I'm not gonna let anything put down another friend.”

[So, Usi managed to hurt himself. Squid's in temporary charge of assiting him and Leve is fashioning some medical equipement (just in case.) And yes, I'll be boring you with a meticulous list of everything we buy and sell from now on. Asea's hut is finished save for a couple stairs and a roof on the second floor which I suspenmded because of Usi's injury and Feral whacking his head. And come on people, tell me what you think so far!]

I'm enjoying the story!

I pity the Xelics, but it sounds like it worked well for you. Getting good equipment early on is always a plus, since you'd have had a hard time affording any of that otherwise.

Just...be careful not to tick them off too much. They're much scarier than Elves if they decide to siege you.

As far as I'm concerned, I'll only play nice when migrants come. First contact went poorly for the uninvited merchants (Basically the ones who whine about trees or animals.) The Vamari and as you saw, the High elves will get far warmer receptions. Squid also appears to be a very dependable medic, so i may keep her in the position; she'd already stitched Usi up and cleaned him by the time I saved.

Cool. You may want to prioritize a Medical Library if we don't get a good doctor migrant. That way she can get an education on all the stuff she doesn't know, and can keep her skills sharp for when they're needed.

@ Mephansteras - I think I requested a crate or such from home. The crafting manuscripts were what the humans had so i grabbed it just in case.

@ Asea - Nope, No migrants, though we might get some this fall now. I'd still rather not though until we get some fields sown at least.

It's a good idea to get one of each so you can build a Main Library for people to study from. Sometimes that's actually easier than getting the 5 needed for a dedicated library. Writing books also helps, once you get a Scriptorium up, since that both gets you books on the subject you want and skills up the writer a little bit. Does take a bit more prep to do, though, since you need all the supplies for the books.
