They look like a merchant ship and its escort, but that hostile posture worries me. Semaphore over "Peace", but get the chain shot ready in case they fire on us.

They return your signal as you get within range for them to receive.  They then give you a gun salute (firing off their cannons on that side, harmlessly away from your craft) and request you join their convoy (seems to be heading the same way).  Rules of the road state price negotiations will be held once entering port should you agree.

The gun mechanics seem a bit weird. There is one gun on some of the smaller ships right? Does this mean that it can only attack on one side? Or is the gun count the number of guns per broadside?

I agree. That is a wonderful deal.

E: Also, ask about their flags. I'm curious as to where they come from.

They hail from Bort, a small distance south of Abola.  They welcome the additional firepower.  More details may be gathered once in port.

Blazewind: Currently 4 days out of Vormallez, in unfriendly encounter with Barque.  No damage to either ship currently.  1 turn from starboard reload.

Nottingham: 6 days out of Abola.  Currently in convoy with Barque and larger merchant vessel.

Continue on.

You continue with the convoy, taking the port side of the merchant vessel to better watch the coastal approach.  You see on larger vessel appear on the horizon, with no flag presented.  It does not appear to have seen you yet.

Closer inspection reveals the size potential for 3 guns.

From your port quarter, so from the ESE with you traveling towards the West.

Completely against us, then. Unfortunate, that.

Move 3 ahead of the ship we're guarding. With the wind favouring the enemy, they'll be coming towards us quite quickly, so we'll want to get ahead to meet them. Both the barque and my own Nottingham should be maneuverable enough to get off a broadside and then turn around for a second, while a ship as big as that probably is not. Chain shot on both sides for me. Don't actually fire until they definitely hostile, though.

On a side note, how many squares away is the horizon?

On the contrary.  You have favorable winds.  Coming from not quite directly behind.  Other craft is running perpendicular to them, in your general vicinity.

Your men prepare the chain shot as ordered, keeping an eye out for any hostile actions as you maneuver your ship in front of Merchant vessel.  The friendly Barque crosses the merchant's wake, 6 squares to your aft.

Horizon is 30 squares out, opposing craft is now at 20, headed your direction.  Their crew seems to be hustling, but you are unable to decipher their intentions.

Begin a turn port, well hit them with the opposite side if we must.

Begin a turn port, well hit them with the opposite side if we must.

You turn port, and the enemy stays on course.  Wind becomes more favorable as you allow it to hit your sails squarely.  As you do, the Barque fires one shot, barely missing as you turn away from the targeted area (roll 12 vs dc 13).  Your men return fire as your port cannon lines up (14 vs dc 10).  You hit with round shot (4d6=19 damage) on the starboard side.

(starboard cannon ready, 3 turns for port) (3 turns? enemy starboard cannon)
