I really want to get into world of darkness. Any ideas?
« on: August 31, 2012, 09:41:50 am »

I've been intrigued by world of darkness for quite a while now, and would love to get into the new version. However, i do not have sums of cash handy to buy more then at most one book, if that, and this is compounded by having nowhere local to play, with oxford being a fair distance. It's an interesting world, and i would love to give it a shot nonetheless. Does anyone here play, know how to acquire the books or some approved free version cheaply, or know where i could give it a shot online? I'm much obliged that you'e read this, and even more so if you can help me out in any regard.

Well I can't help you with that, sadly, but if you want to experience the Vampire:The Masquerade world first hand [Old world of Darkness, or oWoD], get yourself Vampire:The Masquerade:Bloodlines, slap on Wesp's fanpatch and you play that sucker from start to end, as it's probably the best first person RPG in the history of history.

If you could get your hands on atleast the core rulebook at a discounted price
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
you can play with lots of people online, as there are various active nWoD and oWoD MUSHes available. Some to consider are Haunted Memories: Vienna by Night, The Reach or even a fairly small but very friendly Mage-only MUSH that one of my close friends has just started, called Darkwater.

One thing to remember is that, opposed to what many people will tell you, you don't have to play a vampire in World of Darkness. There are a LOT of spheres and a LOT of supplements that add cool things to those spheres. One cool thing about these MUSHes is that they transform the small focused player run plots that you would find being run at any local gaming store and turns them into a persistant world, where each plot is linked by everyone's different characters. It's pretty cool.

Well what can I tell you, it's a First person Action RPG set in the old World of Darkness, whereupon you play a newly embraced vampire. It's incredibly atmospheric and will probably be in near everyone's "list of games you play through every year", released by Troika of "Arcanum" and "Temple of elemental evil" fame, incredibly buggy upon release.

Fortunately, one mad soul has taken upon himself to debug and restore deleted content to the game, creating the unofficial fan patch which is absolutely required.

Also includes one of the best horror levels in gaming history, together with Thief 3's Shalebridge Cradle.

Also also has the single best voice acting you've heard in a videogame, so it's worth it for that alone.

I think I still have some first edition Vampire and Werewolf sourcebooks laying around somewhere. And I think the core book for Mage. Kinda lost interest after that. Plus the combat system always seemed to be horrifically broken when we tried using it.

Mage is a very cerebral game and thus hard to storytell

Maybe this can point you in the right direction, maybe not.

http://www.owbn.net/

One World By Night is an international live-action roleplaying association for Vampire. Now, you're probably not looking for for live-action roleplaying....action, but browsing their forums and community groups you might be able to find tabletop gaming groups. I say might because there's a bit of snobbery from the LARPers toward the table top, but it's as good a gathering of online WoD players as you're going to find.

Eh. Mage and any other WoD game can be reduced to Monster of the Week. Mage only gets cerebral if your GM likes running cerebral campaigns.

Yeah, but it's hard not to get into the matter turns vampires into lawn chair debates at a certain point.
Or does a faith healing work in a revival tent coincidentally or not, what if one person is a non-believer etc.,

I don't know if the argumentation is, by definition, part of the game though. I've always seen that as a function of the kind of people that come to play Mage. They've got an idea about how spheres combine and they're willing to defend their interpretation to the death. I've played Mage games where players don't take the use of spheres as seriously and in some ways, I think it makes for a better game. (At least, a quicker game with less acrimonious debate.)

In my experience, it takes a very skilled GM to run a Mage game. You're talking about wrangling characters that can reshape reality through the power of their belief. One of the best sessions I ever sat in on, the GM made sure that there were *always* bystanders around, so people couldn't start flinging fireballs or flying willy-nilly. Very little actual magic got used, and when it did it was 'cloaked' in coincidence and luck.

For example, an Akashic Brother needed to flee a combat situation from a 10th story hotel balcony. He used a mixture of Time and Forces to do a controlled slowfall, making sure to "bounce" off railings and walls and what not. That way, it was somewhat plausible to the crowds below that he got up with only minor bruises. Especially since he was dressed kind of like a ninja. :p
