Taintbroil. Orcish Fort! (MASTERWORK SUCCESSION FORT)
« on: August 12, 2012, 05:41:53 pm »

So, we have a masterwork fort, so why not an orcish one? The thought occured to me after the ten billionth time an elf was decapitated by rusty barbed wire. Anyone intrested?  For details, here is the world:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This Is Shiv. Shiv is a fucking hellhole made of fire, sand, and death. The North pole? It's a temperate biome. Elves? All of the regular elves are DEAD. Eaten by 5/5 dragons. There is a single camp of elven fanatics living in a forest plagued with elephants and carp. It's so hot I swore I've seen a dwarf melt. See that tower in the southwest corner? Yeah, that guy has at least three diffrent secrets at her command, and she has been brutally oppressing her civilization for generations. This place is so Armok forsaken we would have to be insane to settle here. Guess what we're gonna do?

I'm going to put up a poll for what kind of biome we should settle. Any requests for being orc'd, or to play a turn, should be posted here.

Standard spring to spring rules here. DFhack is allowed for stonesense, and I don't mind if you exploit. Therapist is obviously okay.

EDIT: So, We have, as a turn list:

Hello.
I'm interested in a turn!
I'd love to kill some tree-huggers elves with some Orcs.
I just have a few questions about this succession game.
1- What version of Orc Fortress are we using? The stable or the developement one?
2- What are the masterwork parameters?

The stable release of Orc Fortress for now. My Parameters are as follows:

No Aquifer, normal farming, smithing, mining, weaker traps enabled, caravan bodyguards, no diseases, every race but illithids enabled. HOWEVER, I should mention that because changing these settings requires a re-gen, the settings you have won't apply to the world, so it will stay static.

Alright, I'll redownload everything for safety.
Now, I'll wait for the poll. :)

Edit: I voted for "MOOOAR DESERTS". It will be even more fun if it's a terrifying biome or at least Savage Wilds.

I like to be orc'd, as Nickname:"Squee", Professionname: "the most cowardly of orcs"  How the character play out in the end is up to you.

Oh, and from personal reference I would prefer if this fort would be played with the current development version, to help with balancing and finding bugs. But again, up to you.

Mebuy, you're the scribe. It's a combination of manager and bookeeper, and I typically throw broker in on top of that. Funnily enough, Elven fanatics are on our side, while normal elves would be shoving mythril spears down our throats come spring of year two.

Looks like we get to embark in the middle of a hellish desert. Probably sacrifice one of the first migrants to get lava flowing, build some magma glass furnaces, make everything out of green glass. Except for, say, weaponry, which I think should be made with ironbone, at least at first. If we fail horridly in a non spectacular fashion, we can always revert the save. If we fail horridly in a spectacular fashion, obviously we let it stand :). Does anyone know if the new cave blobs will breed?

Naym: Gork
Gendur: Male
Prafesshun: Brewer

Gork never has to worry about someone trying to kill him. Two reasons. One, he is always behind walls, with a bunch of armed orks around him. Two, none of said orks ever try to bump him off. Why? It is because he has the booze, and he knows it. Orks need booze. He knows that too. So as long as he keeps making booze and keeping everyone drunk, he is one happy ork. If the drink stockpiles start to go down, he completely freaks out knowing that is his bastion of defense. As long as there is booze, he is happy. If there is lots of booze, he is even more happy. And when there is lots and lots and lots of booze, he is  :D :D :D  And since he knows he has the booze, he knows he can get away with whatever the f%#k he wants, because no one can kill him, because he's the only one who can make de booze. So he typically acts like a complete jerkoff, but only when there's booze; he becomes right friendly when drink stocks start to go down. Incidentally, he is very very jealous (to the point of attempting murder) of any other brewers doing his job. Because he is very afraid of being replaced.

We are going to need meat. Lots of meat. Now, we can butcher dwarves, humans, and dorfelfs (Or "Drow"), so we can derive sustenance off of them. But we need a good meat animal. Most of what we can get involves the words 'Lizard" "Raptor" "Dragon" and "War" In some combination (Including a War Dragon Raptor. I have no idea what that is. I hope I never have to find out.) Oh, and badgers. There is also bound to be some domestic fowl, but we need something fast growing, cheap, and fast breeding. The Boneyard eats bones in stacks, and that is where most of our early metal is probably coming from. We will do without wood for awhile, but we can set up a tree farm eventually, if we can get twenty logs for a timberyard.

EDIT: Just remembered, no timberyard. We can cremate vermin for ash, but we cannot farm trees, like, at all. Almost everything we use is going to be an animal (Or dorfbone) Product. We have two real options when it comes to equipment: Jury rig the crap the invaders bring, and fling the spare orcpower at them in droves, or use a more ES style approach with a few carefully equipped champions swinging around katana.

@Wrex: I've never had luck breeding cave blobs unfortunately.  The Orc Fletcher can make arrows with contact syndrome without blob parts, though, if that's what you're interested in (e.g. fire arrows are: coal, wood, gold thread, bloodsteel).  I would love to see a report on how effective those arrows are, if you get a chance.

As you said, no timberyard.  The Orcish Factory can burn farmed/harvest tree shrubs for coke though.  If you want wood you'll have to do it the old fashioned way, dig a big hole in a soil layer and let spores or grass grow in.

@Xvareon/Gork:  Orcs are not alcohol dependant like dwarves.  They still like it of course.  But you have even a more important responsibility too: filling casks with fresh blood for the bloodsteel crafters.  If you're really in tough shape for weapons industry you can barter both booze and blood to the Freelancer's Guild for some half decent iron weapons.

A note: Creating magma in workshops will not enable magma-furnaces, because they are not in the buildings list, unless a volcano or magmalake is discovered.
