I'm sure history will look back and only remember the really good stuff, forgetting the tonnes of rubbish, and will consider this an amazing decade for music.

1963-1971: Acid trip.
1971-1980: Figured out how to make artificial electronic stuff.
1980-1988: Serious white guys in silly outfits Part 2: The Reckoning.
1988-1999: Anger.
1999-2006: Incoherent yelling.
2006-2010: Perpetually in the club.
2011-Present: Disco revival and twerk-time.

1930-1950 is Jazz and Swing some more, having gone mainstream and Country.

1971-1976 is missing twenty minutes long rock suites. Dark Side of The Moon, 2112, Tarkus, Pawn Hearts, Close To The Edge... At no other time in history there was such a concentration of waaaaay longer than usual rock songs.

1976-1980 is the original Anger, with Punk getting big then deflating in a few short years.

Meh, either you're doing generic church stuff (which is pretty non-interesting), or you're breaking your fingers laying down some sick mad classical shit, yo. In short: It's either boring or waaayyy complicated. That applies to most instruments, though

In fact, I wish there were more bands that go out of the Rhythm/Lead, Bass, Drums, Keyboard comfort zone. It's not that someone went and proven it cannot work - quite to the contrary, for example a Saxophone can sound scary as hell.

EDIT: That was appropriate for this thread, just noticed Hans Zimmer, the composer, was born in 1957. Bach (whom I usually hate) might be a better example here

Yeah, the Church sure does like Bach, in particular Concerto for Organ in A Minor.
