Changing the [CHILD] tag on a monster shouldn't require a new world gen as whenever you load a world it re-loads the files, the only time you should need to re-gen is when you introduce a new creature/item etc.

Thanks for the info. I'll check the raws when I get home tonight. I normally don't mod, but this seems more like a bugfix than a cheat.

Make sure you are changing the raws for your game, and not <DF>/data/raw so it applies to your current game.

Dragons are in creature_standard.txt, btw. :D

Thanks for the info. Knowing where to look will save me a lot of time, I appreciate it.

Why can't I ever have dragons....
Give them the [SEMIMEGABEAST] tag. It will make them much more common, and ensure enough breeding pairs survive worldgen. I did it with hydras because they kept getting killed due to being so trigger happy.

Claerly you are unfamiliar with emergency modding.
Changing creatures requires generating a new world for the changes to take place.

Only adding/subracting creatures (or any entries) themselves requires a regen. Like SRD said. Almost any other changes to pre-existing creatures will take effect immediately, including adding the [CHILD:x] token mid-game.

The path you need to go to in order to accomplish your breeding program is [DF directory]/data/save/[your region name/number here]/raw/objects/creature_standard.txt.

If you use [CHILD:5] or something, hatchlings will be considered adult and begin laying eggs of their own in 5 years after hatching. they simply won't be full-sized until they're 1000 years old

Remember; the raw files in "[DF directory]/raw/objects" do NOT affect worlds you've already generated. The raw files there are only used to generate new worlds with, while the raws in the save's own raw/objects folder affect that save alone. This is a significant improvement over the days of 40d when all saves used the main raw/objects folder, so if you wanted to remove something, or use a mod that removes something, older saves would cease to function because the game [still] can't handle the loss of a raw entry mid-game, because the save calls on that entry.

Couldn't you adjust the growth rate to make dragons breed as fast as guinea fowl?  For some reason I like the idea of flocks of dragons burning mountain homes...

So, what you're saying is I can't alphabetize the animal-men after world gen?  Hmmm, that explains a lot....

Yeah. That would be hilarious, too. And ‼FUN‼ if they start fighting becuase they're too crowded.

Sabreur: you might want to give your dragons' offpring a nice, full-sized pasture zone, and keep them the hell away from your meeting halls. Or not... :o

I'm not sure about that, but if you've tried moving them to a different file in alphabetical order and it didn't work, that's good enough explanation for me.

So then the game is like a kid with OCD whining at it's mother (you) because you rearranged it's room, so now it doesn't wanna go to quire practice until you put it all back. :P

Lots of great ideas in here. I'm thinking about splitting the save - on with minimal modding, just enough to get the dragon eggs to hatch properly. Another modded into insanity with dragons laying hundred-egg clutches that mature in a year. Then I'll give every dwarf a pet war dragon and watch the fireworks. I have this lovely mental image of a kobold thief revealing himself in the main hallway, giving everyone just enough time to say, "Oh, sh-" before everything explodes in a fiery apocalypse.

unless your military is completely fireproof, you'll want to keep pet dragons as far away from them as possible

Clownsilk clothing and metal armor?  It will prevent clothing from lighting on fire and as long as you dont fight on wooden roads or on grass the short burst of dragonfire shouldn't insta gib dwarves.

...I think...

probably, though you might want to check on the fire-proof, magma-proof and dragonfire-proof notes, since without modding, dragon fire is hotter than magma, enough to melt steel iirc. so clownsilk and candy armor are advisable
