First off it has taken two years... 2nd off if he had said this would operate like tome 4 with steam, I wouldn't be bothered. I donated before steam and was given a steam key. The implication going forward is that steam will be adom deluxe and we have to pay again.

Oh right, you're the guy that thinks that programming isnt work. Yes, it has taken two years. Programming isn't easy, no matter what you may think. Adding a lot of stuff takes a lot of time. For all we know all the old ADOM code was a huge steaming turd and half of it had to be rewritten!

ADOM will remain free, ADOM Deluxe will have some special enhancements and such---perhaps more significant ones to some versus DarkGod's approach with Donator/purchaser status on ToME 4 thus far, perhaps not.   All told, it is really quite clear cut...

From what i read, all the indiegogo goals and stretched ones are going to the ADOM that will remains free.
ADOM deluxe , the not free version from steam, will get everything from the free version, and on top of this will :
Quote from: from the indiegogo stretched goals entry
ADOM Deluxe will include new challenge games, restorable save files and an extended character generation process allowing you to select from more options.

I really like that he's putting it all out for free, other than some special bits which aren't damaging to non-paying customers. I think a lot of people would be happy to pay for their freeware games (ironically) as long as they weren't forced to, and I hope this model happens a lot more. I know there have been a lot of games I'd prefer to donate to over time, rather than buy out right at a high price.

Unfortunately it seems that this fails most of the time - either they just change from freeware to commercial or they go down the Cataclysm DDA route and don't live up to any of their promises.

So, ADOM. I probably haven't played this game in close to ten years, but i tried out PR 23. I decided to go with a good old gnomish elementalist, but i've only won a standard victory with fighter, pally and monk.

So in the puppy cave, I find a pool on the first floor. I figure, "Why not?", and drink a few times. After cursing me and some intrinsics, I get a wish. At this point i'm not sure what to wish for as I haven't played in ages. I wished for swords of sharpness :) but only got one. With sword in hand, I actually manage to save the dog, but decide to risk the pool on the way out. It gave me intrinsic invisibility and see invisibility, and another wish! This time I went for seven league boots, because they rock.

When I get to dwarftown, I realize that I can't do the arena because of invisibility, which sucks. Now I have to risk a pool somewhere else to remove it, but it let me get the graveyard and such out of the way. I couldn't even hurt the bone golem :( I just ran away with the gauntlets, which was tricky not to get caught in the little alcove. There was a pool in the shortcut to the HMV, and it removed invisibility, shuffled other intrinsics around, and also removed my curse finally. I was pretty lucky not to get doomed.

When I get back, i got a scroll of summon familiar i think from Thrundrar. So i decide to get a pet. On the second floor of the dwarven halls, i read my scroll. Out comes a greater earth elemental. I think "Ok, we'll see if this will do." Now I have to tackle the Temple of Fire and the High King, for the ring and the Orb. I don't have a ring of ice yet, so i figure the skeleton is first up. When I get to the bottom, I make the bridge and open the door. One step inside and my elemental pops through the wall and one-shots the skeleton king. Huh.

I got a ring of ice in there, and had enough gear to make the attempt for the orb, but i discovered that my companion couldn't take the heat :( I had to leave him in the cave. The tower itself wasn't too bad, but i had a scary moment when i lured the Ancient Chaos Wyrm out. He got too close and critical hit me twice, and took me to 1 HP! I had my first corruption at this point, acid blood, and he was blinded by it, thankfully. I ran away and took more hp away, and managed a kill in melee lol.

So, orb in hand and elemental in tow, i went to go find the casino, and take care of the water temple on the way. I saved the sage earlier, the amulet was one of my first found. The temple was a pushover, as I went to the casino first, and found and bought True Aim, for only 20000. I am now just past the kitty floor, having sadly forgotten all about that until far too late. On the upside though, this companion is a complete monster. His notable kills so far: 1 Skeleton King, 1 Snake from Beyond, 1 bunny master, and the cat lord.

Here's a pic or two of my gear and the info i see on my pet, i don't have a stethoscope so i can't see its numbers.

I was pleasantly surprised at the graphics and music, they are quite nice. As for Gnomey, I think him and Pebbles stand a good chance at closing the gate. We shall see. Thanks for reading :)

That's perhaps the luckiest familiar summoning I've ever seen!

What an awesome ally ! his damage output looks insanely high, must be very helpful to have in some place.

My Dwarf Barbarian managed to reach the Ancient Chaos Wyrm in the tower of eternal flame and managed to beat it
-

Having obtained Vanquisher in a pre-crowning really helped a very lot (using Very Aggressive tactic instead of Berserk, so while still boosting my damage , it would then lower by half the negative impact on my DV)

It was more difficult to take that creature out than the Snake from Beyond (water temple), as i had to deal with the very huge amount of fire elemental, grue and demons found in there that were stronger than the water equivalent found in the water temple that i nearly all one shot-ed with Vanquisher.
I had to move out and return several time to get back some food with all the waiting i had to do ( press W then 5 to wait 20 turns ) in my ambushes

the +10 strength comes from the Orb of Elemental Fire i took from the Ancient Chaos Wyrm corpse and put in my "Tools" slot.
The negatives things comes from the 2 corruptions i have

I've been lucky to get the artifact pickaxe Hammerhead on my crowning, it's a great item as it has no chance to break while digging, unlike those very rare regular pickaxe ( didn't found a single one up to now ! fortunately i had found some wand of digging to deal with the lack of pickaxes )

Oh and i was lucky enough to kill a Dark Sage in very early game and had it dropping a corpse (something very rare), allowing me to gain the litteracy skill that Barbarian lacks to read scrolls.

Man kind of wish I read this more closely given that this is probably one of the better "Crowd Sourcing Promises that mean absolutely nothing" I have ever seen.

One of these days I need to just write a list of those.

As for the game itself.

Man does having graphics make so much of a difference. Though honestly it is a bit cartoony for what I always imagined the tone of ADOM was... but then again more serious graphics would have taken longer, so I can see why they went with what they got.

What do you mean? He's delivering on most stuff isn't he?

My dwarf barbarian is still alive and reached level 22

I had kept all my paralysation wands (only found 2 of them) especially for that encounter, probably the part of ADOM i never liked, for those that do not know what this thing is :
http://ancardia.wikia.com/wiki/Cat_lord
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The problem with strong monsters or bosses is that additionally they tend to shrug off spells and wand zappings a lot, in that case that monster ignored 3 of my wand of paralysation zapping.
Annoying when you know how insanely strong it is in melee (as it hit -through- your armor, multiple times by rounds) as despite my dwarf barbarian has huge amount of health, that health went down by half only in just 2 rounds

Fortunately, my 4th wand zapping managed to paralyse that monster.
And then when changing my tactic to Berserk and using my highly damaging barbarian class ability (tremendous blow) , the damned thing got utterly destroyed and i was really happy to win this one

Now i'm facing some more problem as i got a 5th corruption, not a really good one this time as it impacted my strength

I wish i had found a rare potion of cure corruption or the even more rare scroll of remove corruption, as from the wiki the guaranteed way are either near impossible or too dangerous at my level, or a big lottery (pools) that can just completely destroy your character chance of survival if you're not lucky enough.

edit : as i remembered there was a new dungeon, i exited the cavern of chaos and went back to the world map
I finally entered that new Ice Queen domain and after some finally met her

I ran into the same problem with a crossbow, i found that my mistake was to have placed my crossbow in my hand slots as i did when i use a melee weapon.
ADOM does not work like that, hand slots are only for melee weaponry, to make your bow work, you need to put it in the Missile Weapon Slot and have the ammo in the Missiles slot :
