What material is best for me to use for my military's armour and weapons, short of steel or adamantine. Since I have no flux stones, all I have is the imports. That means that I cannot outfit more than one or two of my military in steel. I am ordering in steel crafts, and steel cages, and everything from steel I can as well as flux, but that will be costly. Do I stick with iron, or use another material

No flux? There should be marble somewhere beneath you.

Personally, I only use steel for axes, armor and swords; All the other stuff is made of bronze or copper.
Steel spears.  You forgot spears.

Spears don't have to be Steel. Steel Spears are better then bronze or iron but even a simple Copper Spear can still penetrate through stuff of higher quality. They might not penetrate through stuff as often and the wounds may be less, but they still do well enough.

I was referring to the fact that steel is excellent for slicing, and my spear dwarves are always severing hands, feet, arms, legs, ears, noses and, occasionally, heads.  Being able to penetrate armor to do so has to be a benefit. ;)

My best fort's military had nothing but bronze armor and stabby things and silver hammers. They were pretty indestructible.

There is an excellent thread about this where a Spearlord armed with a candy spear severed more limbs than an axelord with a candy axe against a bronze colossus.

Cause you can stab a body part off :p

To the one that asked about marble, yes I did eventually find some. Although I had the same problem in a previous fort, and there was no marble at all (anywhere from surface to magma sea)

I do believe it also ended in a discussion in the ways it would be possible to stab a limb off.

And when you do, I expect to hear all about it ;) Maybe not hand grenades, but more like explosive cannonballs

Funnily enough, if I have a military capable of defeating the Goblins, I tend to get a lot of silver weapons anyway. Stupid Lashers though...

DF still doesn't have shrapnel or explosions implemented yet. What a cave in that would make...

Minecart full of booze barrels power rollered through magma to fill it up the rest of the way and light the barrels, then shoot it down the hallway after they are lit, but before they explode?

Quantity has a quality of its own.  Until you can get a more skilled, well-equipped military going, a giant gang of marksdwarves with wooden crossbows, leather armor and boots, and bone bolts, helmets, gauntlets and greaves can do a lot for your defense.
This strategy works great for the initial few waves, before the goblins figure out how to shoot back.
Which always seems to be the first wave for me... ::)

Unfortunately, booze doesn't explode, and hasn't in some time.

Booze does burn though, right?  So you would get a dwarven (rum) napalm strike instead of a shrapnel attack. ;)
