I don't think you're properly evaluating this dude.  People who wander around looking for criminals to stop do it because they're insane.  Don't think of the perks, think like you're fucked in the head.

IRL Batman doesn't have an armored suit and a butler, he has a trenchcoat and a swirly mask.
Personally, I hope it turns a bit out like that. Red Faction: Guerrilla on crack with computers instead of demolition charges. You can't survive in a straight up fight for long, nor do you have a reason to, but you can fuck everything up by hacking half the damn city and thus get away with things nobody else can on your quest of crazed vigilante justice.

As the game goes on the police ratchet up their attempts to find you, but by this point you're the only person in the city that the public actually sees as providing justice, making their manhunt difficult.

It's looking pretty sweet.

I wonder if there's a reason to take random criminals down, besides "doing something good". Just getting money for it would make it unnecessary later in the game. The title seems to imply that's the point of what you're doing (Taking out the bad guys), but will there be enough of a reason to help random folks out once certain demands have been met?

I think you might actually be spot on with that Cthulhu.
Here's some multiplayer/ game details there is also some unseen gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GZRooJ1hsY
EDIT multiplayer gameplay at 9:40 and continuation at 10:50
at 2:55 the developer talks a little bit about that protagonist's motives; It sounds like he had some issue with criminal violence which sparked the flame of paranoia, and he begins to put personal surveillance on his family and people around him which inevitably leads to controversy. From there he goes pretty much full-blown insane and begins some kind of city-wide surveillance, complete with vigilante "justice". Pretty much Batman without the panache.

I would love this game if the main character was a 17 yo ginger kid with pimpels...

I thought that's how everyone in Chicago dressed.

There's a new trailer and release date out: November 22 this year.

So, now we've got the stereotypical revenge/they pushed me too far motivations for the protagonist. Also, a woman, probably a supporting actor and quest giver, who looks like she might be an actual good character rather than a blatant sex symbol. We'll wait and see on that front, though.

It's supposed to be released simultaneously on console and PC, but I won't be surprised if they pushed the PC release date back. I hear Ubisoft has been doing that since, like, forever, but I'm not usually one to pay attention to brand new releases.

This is his narration though.
I'm still seeing it as him being overly paranoid, and then escalating it into a self-imposed need to help people, even if sometimes he's hurting more people than he's saving.

That would be a nice change of pace.

I guess it really depends on what spin the devs put on it, if any. The trailer does make me hopeful, though mostly because of the female character's apparent emotions. If anything they finally learned to give the voice actors some context to deliver their lines with.

This could turn out to be anything. My guess is that it's going to be cool and quite well reviewed, but not nearly what people are hyping it as. I of course have no real idea how it will turn out.

This has "over-hyped" written all over it but it doesn't make it a bad game. I mean Spore got over-hyped and everybody hated it. I played it without reading much about it and I loved the game.

Just don't get your expectations too high.

I really want to play an anti-hero. I got sick of incorruptibly pure heroes. I always go down the evil route in games if multiple choices are allowed.

And you think why I want a game that's supposed to end going that path for so long?
(and yet the "evil" ending of my vapor"ware" MLP fiction isn't actually the true ending. SPOILERS.)
