Has Dwarf Fortress changed you or your life?
« on: June 01, 2012, 10:43:23 am »

I'm not expecting any answers like how DF rekindled your marriage and made you win the lottery, but just like small things.

For me, now, whenever I see some stones or a cliff face, I realize it's not "rock", it could be any different kind of different kind of stone.

I occasionally complain about this worthless, non vermin-killing ragdoll cat adopting someone I live with.

It re-defined my expectations from videogames.

That is to say, I find it much harder to enjoy games where I can't make tallow biscuits out of kittens and kill nobles for annoying mandates.

I also just had a human diplomat enter from the surface, hold a meeting, then exit the map via hell.... I guess he thinks he's pretty hardass.

It's a curse!  :( but one I can glean some elitist joy out of.  :P

I've built a danger room inside my kitchen because I refuse to use them within the game since they're way overpowered inside the game.

I guess? It's changed my definition of what makes a game. That might become relevant when I become a game developer myself.

I'm currently getting a major in geology. Passed a year so far with flying colors.

This is Dwarf Fortress. Where torture, enslavement, and murder are not only tolerable hobbies, but considered dwarfdatory.

It's made me interested in geology and the feasibility of living in a series of toxic tunnels underground.

Also convinced me that the only good fantasy world ever made is Tolkien's :)

Whilst the game itself hasn't the role-playing forum has pretty dramatically, I accidently formed a role-playing group there and as a result am setting up a company, changed my career path from photography to web design, talked someone through life problems and essentially out of suicide, and provided the initial inspiration for that persons life work. So all in all through an awfully large amount of coincidence DF has completely changed my life.

My average fell a bit because I cancelled studying in order to play Dwarf Fortress.
