The Montreal Protests - Make some noise
« on: May 27, 2012, 06:31:18 pm »

So, in response to some low-level student protests, Montreal passed a law making all protests that are not approved by the government illegal. All of them. And they reserved the right to retroactively declare any protest illegal and arrest everyone involved for taking part in an illegal protest.

People have... not responded well. The protests have swelled immensely in size - it is no longer a student protest against a %500 tuition increase (or something thereabouts), it is a city protest against a corrupt and authoritarian government. There's not much you can do to encourage protest like passing a law making it illegal to protest.

...WTF. I was pretty sure those were one of the rights you could NEVER take away. Hasn't the federal government done anything about this?

Well...this isn't the worst outcome, at least.

Wow. They are basically asking for it.

Paperbomb them with requests to protest their restriction to protest? Run the fax machines dry?  Obnoxiously ask if you can protest yet every 5 minutes?

What? Wow, stupidity is apparently much higher in the government than I thought.

Basically what they're trying to do is to disarm a bomb with fire.

Idiots.

Yeah, not much to say other than what the hell.

I've heard before Quebec is kinda wacko, but not this much. Not nearly.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

And so Canada officially falls behind the US in Protest Rights.

So, chances of this ending in a Quebec Revolution?

I'd like to point out that it's not Canada's government yet. It's only the provincial government of Quebec that has enacted this idiotic crackdown legislation. It's basically the worst thing that province's government could have done, and represents complete political suicide for the current government. Quebec is the province LEAST likely to tolerate this.

Canada's government is a very weak entity, if I recall my knowledge of the Canadian Political System correctly. That's why they left Kyoto, there was no way to make the provinces comply with it.
