What to do with too many meals
« on: May 27, 2012, 05:04:15 pm »

So I currently have 35354 prepared meals, and make approximately an extra thousand or 3 every year (200 meat, plenty of alcohol). Since this is more than enough to feed the fort for 100 years, I'm opening this up to suggestion. What should I do with the extra?

Note: The meals are all either exceptional or masterwork, and many of the stacks are worth over 10k. I can buy out the caravan every time it arrives and still have a surplus of meals.

Drop ALL of them on a single kobold, while there on fire.

...I wish. But as stated in my other threads, invasions of all kinds are oddly absent.

Then drop them on a dwarven child.

Don't have that either. I've restricted the population to 20 so that the fort can run quickly. There was one child migrant, but they've grown up into a nice, respectable (mooded) armorsmith, who is currently making 20 sets of masterwork steel everything.

The only thing to do with excess meals is sell them.  I suggest you stop making them at this point as they are just making your item vector longer, with all the implications that has for FPS.

Yes, they are. Too much, actually - I'm making around 200k worth a year, and the caravan can be bought for around 130k. And that's after asking for the expensive stuff.

I have to agree with the previous posts. Quantum pile them and drop them on a hungry dwarf. Perhaps above a hospital bed incase someone forgets to feed the patients. "You were complaining about starving, eh Urist? Here, have some."

The other potential use is just stockpile them somewhere and wall off the section. Extra dorf points if you trap a dwarf along with it. Perhaps give him some crafting materials to prevent him from failing a mood and perhaps a spare pickaxe incase you run out of dwarves thanks to the eventual flood of kobolds you are bound to encounter. (They are not gone. That is just what they want you to think. They are coming.. soon.. Kobold civs are never dead. They are just waiting and plotting for a way to steal your artifact socks..)

The weredwarf Urist McUrist has come! A bearded drunkard twisted into minute form. It is crazed for booze and socks. Its unwashed beard is tangled. It needs alcohol to get through the working day and has gone without a drink for far too long. Now you will know why you fear the mines.

Et tu, Urist

Load lower quality foods into minecarts, send those minecarts on a high speed loop, have an unsecured switch which opens the loop and have it sail off into Dwarf, wall, Magma, Forgotten Beast, or all of the above.

Stop making meals, stop farming, use your Dwarves for other labors.

Maybe keep a locked storeroom full of meals so that if you forget to ever re-enable food production, you can quickly fix it when your Dwarves get hungry again. Of course it could take the better part of a century to run out.
