This whole thread so far has made me faceplam so hard. But out of all these lines, this one DEFINATELY takes the cake:
Mineraft was originally planned as a total ripoff of Dwarf Fortress

As anyone who knows anything about Minecraft can tell you, Dwarf Fortress didn't have anything to do with Minecraft. Hell, I doubt Notch even knew what Dwarf Fortress was back then.

And I thought this Forum was suppose to have better people on it. Then again, internet. 90% of the population are ragey, trolling asshats.

Actually from everything I've heard, MC was intended to be a 3D, first-person version of DF, even if your "player" could float and move through walls, it would still use the same scheme of fortress building and dwarf simulation.  But then Notch made a few test worlds and was like, "No way, I've got another idea!" when he realized how similar things were to Infiniminer.

Never heard that till now. Notch's very first post about Minecraft was "Making an Infiniminer clone" I believe.

It's possible.  To be perfectly fair, I've heard this story most often from Bay12, so it's liable to be a bit slanted :P  I've heard it from the MC forums a few times, but I think that may have been B12 people planting lies and slander, god bless them.

Whatever game inspired Minecraft is largely irrelevant.

The point is that it's enough of its own game now to have people be able to very easily consider it its own genre-defining game.  Most people who don't know what Infiniminer is, except by virtue of it inspiring a few other games like DF and Minecraft, still know what Minecraft is.

The central issue of the thread, however, is about modding Minecraft to make it more Dwarfcraft.

Again, aside from the fact that you can rearrange tiles and even that you can have mechanics based upon switches or levers, there isn't much similarity between the two games at all.  DF is a simulation and a manager at heart, and Minecraft is a first-person game about construction and first person survival.  They have completely different core gameplay mechanics, and simply adding in igneous and sedimentary stone layers won't come close to changing what sort of game Minecraft is at its core.  (Not that Minecraft wouldn't benefit from having any one random region of stone you mine through being somehow different from any other random hole you dig in the ground...)

Minecraft is not even similar to Dwarf Fortress. Like it was said before in this thread, one is a sandbox building game while other is a management game. If we're going to put every game with digging in it in the same category as DF, we might as well say Terraria is more similar to DF than Minecraft is, because it has a hell that you can dig down to, goblins that siege and some degree of NPC housing that you have to build a town for.

Pretty ridiculous to even compare those three.

Long and detailed discussions have concluded: you are not Armok.

Those discussions must have been conducted by nincompoops.

The only official description of Armok suggests he is, indeed, the player.

Wrong, newb. If you'd read the discussions you would know that Toady has made very many comments that indicate that the player is not Armok, full stop, end of story. I know you're new here so I will forgive you calling others here "nincompoops." Once.

There already are levers in Minecraft. Too bad there's no true fluid physics, because then we'd be in for some REAL fun.

Isn't there a tool you can use to convert MC worlds to DF world seeds? Or would that be to complex?

You seem to be under the impression that we're playing some game other than dwarf fortress. It doesn't matter how powerful you make a creature, we will find a way to destroy it. God is dead, and Urist killed him.

The DF -> MC generator works in DFHack now, it's a plugin.  Not sure if it's working for .10 but it probably is.

Converting MC -> DF isn't very possible.  It might maybe work for small chunks, but not very well and then very unreliably.  That's just a conversion that doesn't make much sense.

If you've read what I read, you'd know I'm right and you're wrong so I can insult you and my claims are irrefutable, and my opinions are better. I can say this because I know stuff.

Anyways, before this thread continues spiraling further into the ground, TFC is indeed a mod that adds more ores, rock types, cave ins, and a harder survival scenario. It's not DF, but it's probably the closest thing the game has to it, which isn't saying much, because comparing DF and Minecraft is like holding a stick of butter up for comparison against a basket- it really just doesn't make sense because the two fit different niches. Minecraft may have held some inspiration from DF (as it did with Infiniminer, as well), but it wasn't the final goal or end direction of the game.

I'd say more, but I think I'm reiterating what caddybear and Kohaku have stated already. Now, I don't suppose there's any chance we could redirect our topic of discussion back to Minecraft/TFC? It looks neat, but it'd break compatibility with most of my other mods and would make a nightmare out of the CTM maps I play frequently.

Almostedit: I don't think it's possible, Torrasque, but I know that at one point there was an embark -> Minecraft map converter, but both have been long updated so you'd have to use older versions for each.

Thanks for using a totally unique comparison instead of the old APPLES AND ORANGES thing. I just hate that, because well apples and orange are quite similar if you think about it. The are both fruit, they are around the same size, etc.

How that for an atempt at derailing a pretty useless thread?

Not so good, really.  This thread has been off the rails since the first reply.  Derailing it further isn't going to change things.

The OP asked, 'what do you think of it?'  Twenty-seven replies in, and there has not been a single response to the question.  There has not been any discussion of the mod itself.

I could change that... I've played that mod and I have an opinion.  But I'm not gonna bother.

Dragonchampion, I suggest just locking this thread and letting it slide into obscurity.

And in an attempt to avoid this thread jumping the rails completely and crashing into a housing block, I shall respond on-topic.

Honestly, I never got the whole "realism" thing.
Yes, it doesn't make much sense to be able to carry a small civilization in your back pocket in handy-dandy cube form, but I'm happy to throw that under "Acceptible Breaks From Reality" if the alternative is this mod. Honestly, the best part of this mod to me is the metallurgy and stone/tree types. If you can cut those parts of this mod wholesale and put it out as its' own mod, I will be a happy Flare. I like the variety this mod gives you in terms of building materials, but not the incredible restrictions and nerfs it lumps on you.

But that's just me.

Why has this thread turned into a DF/MC flamewar?
I think this mod will be one of my absolute favorites. It's got the complex content of DF combined with the slick interface of MC. It's going to be great.
