EDIT: Well this is BS... I fought a War human in the arena and one-hit him down to exactly 1 hp. Then for 2 minutes he managed to not get hit once and Armok got too tired.
Although it counted as a loss, I still got gold, training points, and a level.

It might help if you tone down the activity level a bit, or let his switch to a more energy consumptive state when he is moderately tired.
