Hugo turned to Gizogin and Gizo X expectantly.  Gizogin simply shook his head, saying, "I don't have any secrets.  My work has always been open."

"Likewise," said X.

Lana snorted.  "Right, like how you lied to me this morning and held me against my will.  No deceit there."

Gizogin whipped around to face his doppelganger.  "What's she talking about?"

"Don't bother," Lana said, cutting off X's reply.  "He trapped me because he thought I was dangerous.  He's right.  You all know that I'm Gizogin's sister, but that isn't entirely true.  My father was the demon Ngedlu.  My magic and my teleportation come from being half-demon."

[On an unrelated note, I'm now inside Ganon's castle.  Broke the forest barrier, still have five to go.  I really don't feel like it right now, though.  I might play some more Kid Icarus instead.]

[Well, that's a pretty "meh, whatever" thing around here. Not one of us exists naturally in this world, all of us break the rules constantly, and all of us are effectively chaotic neutral spellcasters of some variety. Lana is only threatening in one manner which the rest of us are not: she's a woman, of course! :P]

Lana had recieved about as much muttering attention as those before her.

Being the next one in order around the tableslab of floor that had fallen from above, Eric stood up for his announcement.

"I'm pretty sure everyone here knows I can make just about anyone do anything with no effort on my part, and most of you that pay any attention would know that I've been breeding and butchering centipedes in the basement, based on the fact I can so easily control them. They're perfectly tame, and I've ordered them not to offer any resistance or attempt to escape when being assaulted by members of our population, so we can safely butcher them. I don't actually have any other secrets, besides that the gods pretty much all want an excuse to smite me at this point, because I tried to prevent death from occuring in the first place by transfering a soul directly to another body. I lied to Wierd and Roead about that being an extra benefit from a deity; I was experimenting with it on my own. Athel accidentally got himself trapped because he died before I figured out how to provide a new body. So that's what happened to him..."

"Oh, one last thing: I have one of Thari's books, "My friend, Kodkod." The first half she details how she came to meet Kodkod, the rest is something like a journal of her experiments in the various magical disciplines she attempted while working in the tower. It includes some info about the spells she came up with and how to cast them. I haven't actually tried using any of them yet, for obvious reasons."

Weird bit his lip. He wasn't sure this was a good thing to say publicly, but it was at least tangentially related to the nameless fuckwad that was pulling all the strings.

"I don't know if it is related to our mutual malefactor or not;" he started, "But.. over the past few weeks, I have tried to patch things up between eric and myself; while nobody would believe it from what has come from those attempts. Trust me, I hardly believe it myself-- yesterday, I had the most obscene potty mouth you could imagine, and called eric everything but a sane and rational person.  The issue, is that I have no idea why I keep doing this. I would like to state it openly that I do not intend to be adversarial to anyone. While I distrust Eric's powers, I am sure he has equal incentive to distrust mine; none of us are explicitly trustworthy, which is, I presume, why this meeting was called.  I can live with everyone here being dangerous. We are all dangerous, in our own ways."

He slipped off the now practically soiled looking pigtail gloves. Constant wear while doing manual labor and working in dirty conditions had taken their toll on their once gleaming whiteness, but he held them up anyway.

"These aren't just ordinary gloves, for instance. They are the result of shared research between X and myself concerning the mechanical subjugation of magical forces. Suffice it to say, these things allow me to handle considerably more magic than I could ever possibly hope to control unaided. With both of these on, I could possibly raise every last dead man, woman, child, fluffy kitten, and crawling insect for miles around. At once. The prospect terrifies myself, so if it makes any of you have pause as well, I perfectly understand and agree. They are also very utilitarian, and I have made almost wreckless use of them since the earthquake earlier in the week. The first 2 firings of that big kiln outside, for instance. The very bricks being laid under our feet were fired using magic I commanded with these gloves. Hell, the ice I sprayed everywhere down here the day of the earthquake to buy time to evacuate-- same story.  I want to use my powers, and my creations to make life better and more bearable for the people living here. While I have power enough to possibly lay waste to the whole countryside, it is always easier to destroy than to create. I take no joy in destruction; any idiot can do that. Not every idiot can take a hammer, and not use it to smash, but to shape a better future, like the blacksmith works his iron. I don't think that any of us considers ourselves to be idiots-- and so, I refuse to accept that any of us would be one, unless undeniably shown to be otherwise."

He bit his lip again.

"If, In the fullness of time, *I* should be shown to be such an idiot, I want it known now, while I still have some credibility, that I WANT to be put down, or rendered harmless in such a circumstance. It goes against everything I believe in to blithely destroy, or torture, or deface without provocation or cause. It is that provocation or cause, that worries me.  As I said, I have recently been trying desperately to avoid direct conflicts with other people here, but circumstances have been betraying me like a knife in the back. A misunderstood word or phrase, a misinterpreted action or gesture, and even sometimes, like as of late, a complete failure of self control and composure-- these things can kill us. Our enemy uses subtle things to set us off, or to cause a trainwreck. I want to tap the brakes on this particular one right now. While at times I may come across as a complete and insufferable ass, likewise, there times that each of you will suffer the same plight. If you can overlook my seemingly pathological dick-headedness, I will attempt to overlook each of yours as best I am able. We should each make promises to ourselves and each other to do the same. "

"Instead of "watching" each other, we need to watch out FOR each other. Random occurances can mean the difference between prosperity for us, or bloody !!FUN!! For him. This is entirely hypothetical, but say-- X over there.  He's a really sophisticated AI, with failsafes, error correction, and a whole host of things to make sure the remains who and what he is. But no system is perfect, because materials aren't perfect. Memory cells can be dodgy; software can have quirks and bugs. Those are things that are subtle, and could be exploited: what if a tiny bit of really radioactive pitchblend got inside his processor, for instance? Radiological decay is a random event. The way it would manifest in his behavior could take many turns. Its the kind of thing that might be used against him by the kind of adversary we are facing. Instead of being paranoid OF X, we should be paranoid FOR X. The enemy doesn't *MAKE* us do things against our will. That is the point here.  As such, we have to willfully choose not to attack each other."

God he hated being a grandstander, but it had needed to be said.

"I'm not picking on X, or anyone else here. He was just in the front there..."
(There was a little forced laughter..)
"We just have to be aware that nobody makes our decisions for us, except for us. We should watch each other's backs for signs of mysterious manipulations, and help each other deal with them if, and surely when, they do happen. We should choose to accept that help from each other. Distrust will kill us all."

[@Eric: I cleaned that tower of anything illicit. Thari kept her scientific journals in her room, since she was always working on them.]

Roead scoffed. "I've always known everyone was out to get me. It's what makes a successful trader. Well, my business is my own damn business, but don't worry, I couldn't be arsed to kill you all anyway." Without warning, he leapt at Eric and drove a knee into his groin. "That's for having one of them fuck-magic books all along, though!" He turned to Wierd. "Sorry, was that coming off as an insufferable ass?"

[BTW, someone else who's read Nist Akath can take control of Captain Ironblood. I'm not sure what to do with the character, and I'd almost forgotten about him.]

Said weird, biting back an acidic deluge. It was no secret now that he and eric were on less than stellar terms; a good portion of him greatly approved of Roead's ...unique.. form of admonishment. Then again, the equitable and honest part of himself said he should get up, spread his legs, and demand a similar kick; the only differences between he and eric in terms of being contaminated by knowledge of evil magic, was that he had wanted nothing to do with it from the start, and had taken efforts to seal it away, forever if needed.

Regardless of the intentions, he *had* created peepers with it. That alone deserved repeated kickings. Speaking either way would be calling the kettle black. 'No comment' was the best he could do.

[@Eric: I cleaned that tower of anything illicit. Thari kept her scientific journals in her room, since she was always working on them.]

[I nabbed it before you got around to hauling away my pile of loot, if you recall. Doesn't even have useful descriptions of casting rituals, just half-assed mentions of plans and accomplishments, and descriptions of what some of her spells offer and their requirements. It's not the scientific journal kind, it's the "Dear journal, I made a flower that bites chunks out of people today in memory of Kodkod! Too difficult to keep it alive, though" kind.]

Eric doubled over onto the floor, unable to unclench his jaws except to mutter a barely audible "I. Hate. You. Too."

[Ouch, that had to hurt.  I'm a little bit surprised at how little reaction all these revelations are getting.  I guess once you've been around all the other forumites for a while, things stop surprising you.]

[Another OoT update!  I just beat Ganon.  It's Master Quest time!  But I think I'll put that off for a while.  I'm all zelda'd out.]

[Every day is a slow day! Especially when you're worrying about finding enough cash to pay for tuition and fees in jsut two days because the fuckers didn't get your FAFSA, which you definitively sent in LAST month.

I'm gonna be poor and out of college, and I'll never get another chance. :C]

[Female office drone: "Oh yeah! I was supposed to file these forms a month ago! (Lipsmacking sound) Silly me, I sat my coffee down on it and forgot all about it! I sure hope it wasn't important!"]

Several days later her house falls into an expansive underground cavern. Eric walks up to a nearby ledge, looking over the pit her house is in, while she clambers out of the rubble. Arms crossed, Eric looks down at her and says: "You have failed me" and pulls a lever. Four floodgates in the sides of the pit open and magma starts to pour out. Eric walks away, but stops close enough to hear her dying screams. After everything becomes silent, he walks off.

[I'd rob ehr house of everything remotely valuable beforehand, of course. Turns out the family won't be able to pay the power bill this month. That's a very, very bad thing.]
