Issues with screw pumps.
« on: May 14, 2012, 07:31:08 pm »

I'm sure you guys are sick and tired of screw pump questions, but I've been reading the wiki for a while, and I'm still having issues.
I have a screw pump built on a layer above the water in a cave. The water is at 7/7. The light tile is adjacent to an "open space" tile above a water tile.
I have a dwarf operating the pump, and nothing's happening. He's sitting there, pumping away, and it says that it requires 10 power. Water is not moving. It says on the wiki in one place that dwarves can manually power screw pumps, and on another, it says that they cannot. Can they?

They can. Check to see if you built the screwpump the correct way.

are the %% symbols of the pump changing? (indicating it is in fact pumping)
is there space adiacent to the dark green tile to actually pump water to?

Hrm. If you're using version .08 it might be a new bug, but I cannot imagine any reason it wouldn't work in .07. Are you sure the pump is only one level above the water? Remember that if it's dark blue, that means on the level below your current one. Maybe post a screenshot of your arrangement or a little ascii diagram. I believe certain constructions may block the pump from drawing water, like downwards staircases for instance, so try removing some things from the tile it's supposed to suck the water from if there are any.

The symbols are changing. There is space on the other side to pump to.
I believe I have .08. I downloaded this version a few weeks ago, and I'm fairly sure its .08, though I'm not exactly sure how to check. 42 levels below the surface there is black space, 41 levels below the surface is water [7/7], muddy quartzite cavern floor, and a pile of mud. 40 levels below the surface, my screw pump is in the space directly to the right of a blue "open space" tile directly above the water. The pump pumps "from the west".
I've checked everything, and I can't figure out the problem.

All it says is open space? If you go down one z-level, it changes to 7/7 water?

I thought when you're over water, it says open space 7/7 water... Maybe I'm remembering wrong... Still downloading:p

If you downloaded the version you have several weeks ago, it's not 34.08, which was released just today. It's probably 34.07, which had no bugs regarding screw pumps.

Unfortunately, it's extremely difficult to know what you did wrong without being able to see how you've got it set up. If you could describe the problem accurately enough for us to diagnose it without a screenshot, you'd probably be able to solve it yourself. So, take and post a screenshot of hoe you've got the pump set up.

You're remembering wrong; when looked at with the k-cursor, the tile above the water just says open space.

Nah, you're using .07 then, .08 come out like, today I think. I think I'm as stumped as you are. Are both tiles of the pump on the floor or is it a hanging construction?

But yeah, maps or screenshots are always helpful. Sometimes we're able to catch something seemingly not worth mentioning that is tripping things up.

For Windows:
Punch the "Print Screen" button.  This takes a screenshot of your current desktop.  Open any image-editing program, and Ctrl-V.  Now crop the image down to the size you need.

By the way, if the body of water you are pumping out of in the cavern layer is touching the edge of the map, then that body of water will be infinite.  You can pump all you like, but you will not drain water out of it.

Also, make sure you are pumping from exactly one z-level above the water, and there is an open air tile above the water next to the intake tile of the pump.  Make sure that the tile next to the output tile is empty.

If those tiles are blocked, they will let you turn the pump, but water will not move, as it will not have the ability to move anything because either the intake or output is blocked.

Upload the image to img.ie or a similar hosting site, then on the site it should say something like hotlink for forums. Copy and paste the code there into the post.

Is it pumping in the right direction? For example, if you're pumping FROM the left, does it say pump from west?

I'm guessing you have windows 7...go here to get the screenshot, then you have to paste the image into a graphics program like paint, save it.

Then you upload it some place like imageshack.us or img.ie.

Then, once it's uploaded, they should give you a URL for it like http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/3496/49458690.jpg and that you paste in here between the
Code: [Select]
[img][/img] tags.

Then you post.
