so what about farming?
« on: April 24, 2012, 04:40:10 pm »

So I've been playing for awhile and usually I got the practice of farming and how it should work. But this time it seems like I'm not close to even get my farms producing anything. I can't even plant seeds even if I have more then enough seeds for outdoor farming, also I've flooded the area before I constructed the farms.

When marking any of the farms it only claims that there's no seeds available for this location. So any ideas what I've done wrong?

You'll need to process the plants which you want to sow. Brew some drinks/process them

Some crops are underground only, others are above ground only. In particular, dwarven civs only have access to below ground crops. So when you first embark, you'll have to dig out a space before you can farm. You can get above ground crop seeds by plant gathering and trading with humans and elves.

Oh indeed, Farming, should solve your problems concerning above ground and underground farming.

Also, if you're embarked with a mountain biome in your embark, you can't grow aboveground plants.

I embark exclusively on mountains, been many forts since it offered me the ability to plant surface plants :p

It's a known thing with a known tell, if you try to place a surface farm plot in a valid location, it'll have a yellow no soil message. If you place the plot anyway, when it's built it'll say no seeds.

If there's no valid soil, the text is red and you can't place it.

It mentions it in the wiki, iirc.

Same in my current fort.  I'm right on the edge between mountain and, uh, not mountain (damn, forgot exactly what), so, no above ground crops on half the map.

On the flip side, there is an abundance of trees, discovered lots hematite, and, maybe half a Z-level of chalk.  Steel production, go!!!

Also, you don't need mud or, indeed, water at all unless you're trying to plant on stone.

As Mr. S mentioned, it's not that having a mountain biome completely stops all aboveground farming, it simply stops all aboveground farming in the mountain biome. Farming on your other biome aboveground is completely normal. The same thing also occurs if you try to farm in an ocean biome (either by draining the ocean and farming the bottom or through other shenanigans), and it won't allow you to plant there.
