Wait a second, since critically failing a rocket start just gives you zero momentum, and I have a high acceleration module, shouldn't I actually be tied with Kirby momentum-wise, and roll to see who's in fifth? (That said, I suppose it doesn't matter too much, since I'll just get the high acceleration boost next turn, although starting somewhere other than last would be nice.)

Also, when rolling a pass check, does having higher/lower momentum affect the check at all, or is it just a straight up "Whoever rolls higher" deal?

In a private air conditioned box situated at the top of the stands the CEO of Silph Co kept a close eye on the proceedings. "Make a note. Research in stronger starting boosters is to be considered a top priority." Now who will become the face of Silph Co on the track? The man tapped his fingers slowly, keeping time with the throb of engines down on the track.

((Sorry guys!))

Fox McCloud was one with the control-panel of his... Kart, his eyes locked on the track ahead as he mumbled listlessly into his headset, which incidentally hadn't actually transmitted to anything in years. His mind filled with traumatic flashbacks to his past in the Star Fox team, he activated boost, shouted something about 'Evasive action,' and attempted a barrel roll to avoid the enemy craft surrounding him.

Luigi Circuit- Turn Two
1st      2nd      3rd      4th      5th     6th
Player Action

Woo!  Go team Gloomba!

Take the outer loop to hit the dash panels and Drive Defensively to Pull Ahead!

Crank is very confused about where he is right now- the drivers are entering the Red segment of the track, not the curve! Fortunately there is a line of Dash Panels up ahead anyway. Crank Drives Defensively, gaining a +1 bonus to avoid passes and attacks until end of turn- unfortunately, drivers who drive defensively cannot Pull Ahead!

Well, then, I'm definitely driving offensively.

King Harkinian's haunting laughter echoes across the track as he begins pushing his Kart to its limits! [3] Try as he might, though, he is unable to make up any ground on Crank!

Drive aggressively!

Link follows closely in the wake of his King, trying to find an opening! [4] He gains ONE Momentum, closing the gap- they're neck and neck!

((Sorry guys!))

>Drive Aggressively!

"I have to get through... boost... counting on me... I Have To Get Through"

[6] Fox McCloud begins expertly weaving through the specters of his troubled past, finely honed piloting instincts propelling him forward! He gains THREE Momentum and is in prime position to pass!

Aggro drive!

[6] Kirby finds an easy path in the wake of Fox's mad dash, gaining THREE Momentum!

Alright, I'm going to start out by

Driving Aggressively

Here's hoping that my luck is a little better next turn. :/

Slamming the side of the Poltergust 4000 in frustration at his poor start, Luigi's High Acceleration kicks in, pushing him forward with ONE Momentum! [3] Unfortunately, the madcap pace of the rest of the pack is difficult to match, and Luigi yet trails behind!

1st      2nd      3rd      4th      5th     6th

Movement Phase

As the racers surge forward, they hit a broad line of Dash Panels vaulting them forward with ONE additional Momentum!

Crank is guarding his lead, getting a +1 bonus to avoid being passed!

King Harkinian, try though he might, does not have the Momentum to edge past Crank!

Link completes the conga line at the front of the pack, a breath behind both Harkinian and Crank!

Fox McCloud is flying down the track, and attempts to Pass Link! [1]+6 vs [2]+4 Although he swerves around a long-dead foe, his breakneck pace allows him to complete the Pass, moving ahead into Third and losing ONE Momentum! His furious driving rapidly brings him up behind King Harkinian, and he attempts another Pass! [6]+5 vs [2]+4 He breezes past the mad King, taking hold of Second and losing ONE Momentum! Fox just lacks the Momentum to make a move on Crank, but the crazed glint in his eyes betrays neither mercy nor quarter for the Gloomba!

Kirby follows Fox's mad dash, trying to Pass Link for Fourth! [1]+5 vs [6]+4 Unfortunately, the Hyrulian is too wily to give up any more ground, holding on to his position!

Luigi keeps pace with the pack, planning his own charge up the leaderboard!

Cleanup Phase

Boring Cleanup phase this turn, so let me take the opportunity to remind you that the next segment of the track has 2 paths- the inside loop and outer loop. Details in Course Info below. This is not a shortcut, so it doesn't take an action to choose which way to go- just indicate your choice when you post your action.

Rocket Start is a special Race Check, which means that 6's give additional +1 and 1's give additional -1. So the nat one itself gave -1, and the result of a 1 on Rocket Start is +0, for a net -1. Then factor in the High Accel and you're at even zero- not that it matters much since you can't Fall Back at the start for want of someplace to fall back to.

Pass Rolls are different from Racing Checks and are explained under The Rolls tab. To answer your question, Pass Checks are modified by Momentum- you automatically try to pass when you have higher momentum than the Kart ahead of you, and certain actions and track segments let you make a Pass Check during the Action Phase, sometimes even if you couldn't normally pass. Yoink just gave a nice demonstration of the Passing rules in action  :P

Is it too late to join?

This race and the next are full up, but there are 4 slots left in the Third Race (winner automatically qualifies for the fourth Cup Race.) And even if those slots were full, technically there is no maximum player number- you'd get in a race sooner or later and have a career and all that fun stuff. And if you don't want to be a driver, I'm currently polishing up some rules for Sponsor CEOs which will feature prominently in the metagame between races.

And speaking of CEOs, I'll throw you down for dibs on your respective Sponsors. Their Coin might not be the same since I've overhauled how that is determined, so I won't force you to stick with them if you don't want to.

Hm, at least it wasn't a 1, I suppose.

A few quick questions before my action though.

1)Does the Chain chomp threaten both paths or just the outside one?

2)How did Fox get a +6 bonus to his first pass roll? (I thought momentum capped at 5 unless you had a speedy module.)

3)Is the line of item boxes on the curve considered to be a long line or a small one? (That is, will there be a penalty for obtaining an item if other players grab them first?)

4)Does the free pass attempt on a power slide (for this segment of the track) still happen if my momentum is lower than the driver in front of me?

1) Chain Chomp threatens both paths

2) Maximum Momentum reflects the value your Momentum gets set back to during the Cleanup Phase. So if Fox had ended his turn with 6, the Cleanup would have set it back down to 5. Your Momentum can temporarily go above Max (say, mushrooms or dash panels or damn lucky rolls) and below 0 (Thunder followed by a Red Shell hit) in the course of a turn- it just can't be maintained between turns.

3) Long line, no penalty for other players grabbing them first

4) Yes, but you still have to succeed on your Powerslide roll (a Racing Check, so 1's will lose momentum and 6's will gain.)

Hm, I don't think risking the item box is worth it under the circumstances.

Head outside and hit the dash panels, then drive aggressively to speed ahead.

Cue crit fail on dodging the chain chomp and falling back.
