You carefully remove the pieces without putting any pressure on any of the buttons, nothing happens: no new buttons go down, but none of the ones that are down go up.

You press the first button and suddenly all the buttons reset and a low hum fills the room before ending abruptly.

You blink in confusion before you notice your laser rifle glow white and vaporize into a thick cloud of shiny, silvery gas that condenses almost instantly onto the ground and solidifies into a solid lump of metal. Uh.
