Donkeys and crundles, just because of the possibilities. Imagine 2 dorfs sitting at a table.
Dorf1: My steak tastes like crundle.
Dorf2: Well, mine tastes like ass.

Badum tish

On a more serious note:
I'm with the cult of the ocelot. Nothing beats the ocelot.

And ravens.
They are vicious little trolls, but at least they are awesome little vicious trolls.

Demons are preferable to ravens.
A noble just suffered a genuine unfortunate accident.
Has that ever happened before?

Mmkay, I guess I'll have to join the Cult of the Ocelot, too.

Sorry, Kodkod, but you just goddamn terrify me.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.
Check out my RtD!

154. When you get the word "adamantine" on your LA vocab, you quickly cross it out and replace it with "cotton candy" and spend the next 10 minutes in fetal position rocking back and forth in fear. (Yes, I actually did this.)
...Wait. Adamantine is real?...
...155. You are no longer sure what metals are real or fictional.

Best for which purpose?

My Dwarves won't eat anything feline, canine, ursine, or vulpine unless they had to kill it in self-defense.  They won't buy leather from any of those animals, and anything that is found in the stockpile which is made of those leathers is sold to remove temptation.  They keep them as pets or war animals if they can purchase them.  Trapping and training their own hasn't been overly successful for them yet.

That's one kind of best.

Pigs are meat, milk, and leather that doesn't need grass.
Poultry is eggs.  Eggs are good for dogs, er, I mean Dwarves.

That's another kind of best.

Personally, Feline, because Feline.  ;D

PENGUINS!
They're so cute.
And in times of need they can be beaten to death by an entirely unarmed dwarf  :D

I'm partial to badgers since I realized that they were constantly flying into fits of rage when they scare my dwarves. Every now and then I get a message telling me something like, "the Badger Sow is no longer enraged."

Depends on the fort and Biome. An old classic is the Giant Cave Scorpion, but I also like more conventional animals like the noble war pig. Any animal that can be assigned to my dwarfs is a definite plus, though if I get anything interesting from the pointy ears I usually try to lean towards that or any breeding pairs I get.

Right now, I'd like to have some Walruses or seals. I imagine Walruses would be pretty good with fort defense, what with their size and (I think) ability to swim!

You know it. But seriously I meant Giant Desert Scorpion. I wonder though, since they don't ever breed, do Giant Bark Scorpions breed or other giant insect breeds? I know they have pretty low life expectancies, but it might be useful to try to shore a fort up with some giant scorpions capable of reproducing.

Scorpions are arthropods, not insects.[/OT]

Dammit, it looks like snakes can't be war or hunting trained in vanilla DF. :( War (giant) rattlesnakes would have been pretty boss.
Neither can wolves or giant dingos. Much disappointments. Guess I'll have to settle for war dogs and/or hope for a pair of grizzlies or maybe giant tigers...

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

SHEEP.
Wool, milk and they don't use much land!
No problem of population explosion, but butchering excess Rams(and Ewes once your flock is too big) gives you meat!

We just need to get Toady to embed a Lisp interpreter into DF.  Learning lambda calculus in order to play the game wouldn't make DF's learning curve much steeper.

Could just add the [TRAINABLE] tag to their entries, very simple to do and does not require a reload!

Having a Giant War Rattlesnake would totally be worth the seconds it would take :) and its hardly cheating!

From personal experience, giant dingoes are awesome even without war training. I accidentally left two outside during a siege and they brought down four trolls before dying despite being massively outnumbered.  War training doesn't matter as much for predators that out-mass a tank.
