A dwarf listed under "others"?
« on: April 20, 2012, 07:54:03 pm »

On my "others" unit tab, I've got a fellow by the name of Onget Ulzestsazir, marked as "friendly". He's also marked as a trader, and came with the last migrant wave, but he just stands on the corner of the screen the migrants came from. Going by "A short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry," I'm guessing he's a dorf, yet I can target him via squad menu.

What's up with this? Is this... Normal, or?

As I've heard it, and remember rather poorly, this happens sometimes when a migrant has broker skills, where the game attempts to make them a merchant while also treating them as a migrant.

So, is he useless then? Any repercussions for killing him? Does he still require food/water?

And I believe the proper term is magmatize, thank you.

Ok, so, caravan came and went, and he's still here. And another showed up with a new batch of migrants. What to do, what to do...

Killing. Killing tends to work. Sometimes the best option is also the simplest.

So many wonderful choices.

DFHack has a 'fixmigrant' function that fixes the flags on these errant friendly trader dwarves.

Is this a fairly new feature, or an old one that has yet to be reimplemented?

I made a mod where giant spiders, snake-people, minotaurs, dwarves, and a gnome-like creature were all the same species.  In spite of being radically different sizes, a snake-person and a spider could get married and have a minotaur as a child.
A wonderful love story of a family that is truly without prejudice.

Ordering your military to attack bugged trader migrants will cause a loyalty cascade. Militiadwarfs will start shooting at eachother because their squadmates committed murder by killing a member of your civilization, leading to more murder and more retribution. Dwarves are very litigious creatures and will continue dispensing vigilante justice on eachother until there's nothing left.

Some worlds have this bug, others don't. I have no idea what causes it.

It's a new one, and might not actually be part of the standard DFHack release yet.  It's discussed in the last half dozen or so pages of the DFHack thread.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.
