Wow, this mod's popularity really has skyrocketed. When I got the mod (which was only a couple of weeks ago) there were 3 bandits. Now, according to the website, there's 3624.
Good work devs! :D

anyone new should really do the arma tutorial  :P

I just can't hit the damn zombies because they keep running serpentine, or suddenly turning for no reason

protip: you should shot them before they see you and start chasing  ;)

Yeah, you either need to hit them while they are unaware, at a range (or close with a silenced weapon). Otherwise, you pretty much have to decide whether you'd rather waste ammo attempting to hit them, or wait until they get in range to melee you and stand still.

other option is to get them to chase you down a nice flat stretch of road or something, they'll run  mostly straight after you there, giving you a decent shot.

I discovered this on friday and can't get enough. I'd ask if there was some specific server people are playing on, but there doesn't seem to be much point now since all servers are full most of the time.

I have the mod installed, but it won't show any servers. How do I find a server, and are there any you guys recommend?

No servers in the list at all? Or just no DayZ servers?

Holy crap, the new version is brutal (out for a few hours now.)  By my estimates, the zombie count per building has about tripled, plus they spawn further away (~100M) too.  Solo scavving towns just got way harder.

The zombies are actually more dangerous than PKers now.

Ouch. And I was just about to enter Novy Sobor when I logged off last night.

Spoiler: 1.5.7 Changelog (click to show/hide)

Edit:
Quote from: Rocket, Dayz Lead
I fixed some zombie spawning bugs, time syncing bugs, and now there are alot of zombies. This became apparent in testing, but rather than delay the patch release by a few days (too many people are helicopter dying) the update was released.

So yes, the zombie numbers weren't my intention - but now that it is here, let us see how they play out. Maybe we might actually learn something from it or maybe everyone just wants to jump to conclusions in the first ten minutes...

"more zombies" doesnt sound that bad... its actually more survival from zombies now and not from bandits like it was mostly over the last days.

PTW.

Here's to hoping someone makes a good game like this, but in a post-apocalyptic ( think Fallout, but more ingrained in reality ) setting.

Thus, MOAR bandits.

I think people misunderstand the point of zombie survival settings. It's not the zombies that are the threat. The zombies are just a catalyst. The real interesting part is the human interaction. In this game the bandits ARE what you need to be worried about more than zombies. The bandits ARE the main draw. People complain about the PVP, and yeah, I hate getting shot in the back of the head over a silly can of beans or a bandage like anyone else, but without that kind of interaction, the game wouldn't be nearly the same.

I don't mind it if they pump up the zombie threat a little, but honestly, despite what people may think, they're not the main actor in this story. It's not the zombies themselves it's what the zombies do to people and how they interact with each other. In no other game would I be so absolutely scared of even seeing someone that's on the same team as I am. No other game, if someone I met were blind from blood loss and passing out, would I even need to take security measures and ask them to walk a few kilometers away from they city they were in to avoid an ambush. And in no other game, would putting that kind of trust out there, and having it returned in kind, feel so rewarding.
