I too have a 91-30 Mosin-Nagant(7.92x54r) like Aqizzar. I don't know if he has the Hex model (made pre-war)

I also have a chinese-made SKS (7.92x39), and a Ruger MK-III (.22). My dad has more weapons, and if there's ever a zombie apocalypse, I'm getting as quickly as possible to my grandfather's house which probably qualifies as a small arsenal. He has many, many rifles.

My Chinese SKS has caused me nothing but problems, which is strange because I basically got it right out of the crate.  My friend has a few ideas on what may be wrong with it.  At least the bayonet works.

Just came back from the NRA's convention. They had every (legal) gun I could think of, with some guy on a loudspeaker promoting Mitt Romney as a bonus. I found an AK-47 there, but didn't get it. Later, I went to Cabela's and bought a Mauser. Thing is, it seems nobody carries 8x57 ammo anywhere, except for maybe a couple pawn shops and cheaperthandirt.com.

I've got a Panther AR-15 sitting in a gun dealership in town for me to pick up. Like it has for a couple of months now, I'm just hesitant because storing it's going to be a royal pain, and I don't even want to think about the paperwork that I'm going to have to suffer through trying to pick up a rifle from a texas gun shop when my address of record is in North Dakota.

I very nearly got my hands on a M1 a few days ago, but ended up letting someone else grab it, although picking up a Mosin does sound like it'd be cool. I've also put through a fair number of rounds with a Springfield XDM, and really liked that too. Of course, I'd also like to get a ACOG for my AR, and that's already my disposable income for a fair chunk of time.



Favorite thing that I've ever fired is a M256, but that's to be expected, I suppose.

I don't know why, but I have a love/hate relationship with firearms.

I know how to handle them, shoot them, reload them, and even have a general idea of cleaning and making bullets for them through my dad, who's a pure gun nut. He's been taking me to fire them since I was old enough to know how to not shoot someone, and I love the things to death. The strange thing is that the very thing that makes guns awesome is what scares the heck out of me - Loud noises and deadly projectiles.

I just can't help but shiver every time I see the pistol my dad carries laying on the counter. I'm mentally comfortable with handling the thing, and I know how to work it and that it's not dangerous unless you pull the trigger, but I emotionally freak out at the prospect of even brushing up against it.


I'm kinda surprised someone hasn't mentioned the "Firearms, not Guns" thing, yet. Don't we have a few military people in Bay12?

I know what's wrong with it. It's a gun that was made by the PRC.

While I would love to be able to add something relevant to this thread, I haven't really had any experience with guns. Once some of my friends and I went to a shooting range and used some sort of shotgun (I know next to nothing about guns), but that's the extent of my firearm experience.

I understand that feeling. That idea that even when something is handled carefully it still has the potential to kill is creepy.

You guys don't know what you are missing. There is nothing like holding a well oiled piece of history, Especially one that is as well engineered as a C96

If you're in Washington you probably can get a Mosin Nagant for around $125 at the nearest armory or sports retailer (Like Big 5, there's a lot of those around). They're a good way to get in, that or a .22 gun of any sort. If you're near a real armory or gun store you should try to shop there- the staff will be a lot more knowledgeable, usually, than in sports retailers or pawn shops.

Being paranoid about guns isn't just natural, it's correct.  Lesson number one in my family is that a gun is most dangerous when you think it's safe.  When I got my first gun, my grandfather told me about his post at Gitmo, where they had to empty their sidearms after every shift.  These were marines who handled their sidearms constantly but they still were required to discharge their "empty" weapons into a concrete block just in case they made a mistake.  The concrete block was riddled with holes.

There is no such thing as an unloaded weapon.
There is no such thing as a safe weapon.
