to be fair, that would be gamebreaking, getting a legion of dwarves with tower shields and pikes in a porcupine formation marching out of the main entrance? there wouldnt be a way to counter that. on the flip side, enemies would be far, far deadlier if they were organized in any way other than path their way in. if you had them react to others around them then they would learn from their mistakes and every siege would be hard fought

Huh, 'cause usually what I do is run up to their flank and throw pila at them until they break.

No, seriously, you'd think dwarves would love phalanx formations - given that they can fight in very tight quarters, making their masses of spear-points completely unflankable. But the stereotype is they use axes and hammers and things you need a lot of room to swing around. What's up with that?

Spears don't seem to exist in fantasy. At all.

Unless you're on horseback. In which case instead of sticking to conventional tactics, you're supposed to charge into the most heavily fortified position / the opposing cavalry and make a cool *KRHKSH* noise.

Did you guys seriously just have a heated argument about swords?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyway, marksmen are great, but I prefer champion swordsdwarfs and axedwarfs.

The degree to which you are right matches the degree to which this fact saddens me greatly.

Pike-block + Tunnel = Access denied.

And of course, I would want enemies to use formations too, so that I may play armchair general to a greater degree of satisfaction and imagined self-worth.

Was merely a joke, and just said I like them.  :P
Which is not a joke, but the post was meant as one.

Pike-block + Tunnel = Access denied.

Indeed, unless the goblins suddenly invent grenades.

Welcome to the Mountainhome.

All hail poorly drawn pike tips! And poorly drawn everything else in general.
