Boxes are simply easier.  You make the box, and eventually the dwarf ends up in the box.  Slabs are made special, that takes effort.

I saw it the way most colonies have historically been founded.

A subcultural group sufferes regressive ostracism from their established government. Poor, religiously unpopular, gay, whatever.

Since fixing the government is impossible for their tiny minority, they pool the resources they have, move out, and establish a colony where their social ideals are the norm, and accepted.

Later, if the colony flourishes, the parent civ sends emmisaries to coax them into the ruling castes to make use of their colony for financial gains.  If the sweet talk fails, the army usually gets sent.

Or the spanish main, or any number of colonies.

You brits pushed colonies all over the place.  Nasty military stuff at most of them.

I shouldn't talk, my country tries to run the whole world militarily. (Personally, I think we deserve a "congo" sized black eye to remind us why jingoism and colonialism aren't such great things.)

“The word ‘ivory’ rang in the air, was whispered, was sighed. You would think they were praying to it. A taint of imbecile rapacity blew through it all, like a whiff from some corpse. By Jove! I’ve never seen anything so unreal in my life. And outside, the silent wilderness surrounding this cleared speck on the earth struck me as something great and invincible, like evil or truth, waiting patiently for the passing away of this fantastic invasion.”

Smells like Empire Dwarf Fortress.

I would like to see the consequences of a social structure where you are rewarded for having more letters in your name.

Well Urist McRidiculouslylongnamegiventoyoubyyourparentsinthehopethatyouwillbecomesuccessful, your astoundingly long name means that all of your furniture will be replaced with artifacts as soon as possible,  your tomb will be plated with your favorite metal, and you're the mayor.

A slab is just a lump of rock with a dudes name written on it.
A coffin is GEOMETRY.

I think Logan's run might open the doors to all kinds of interesting social concepts.

When a dorf reaches legendary in any skill, he/she has to ride the (magma filled) carousel! As you get more and more skilled, society takes your possessions away, so you don't enjoy the fruits of your labour, only the USELESS can profit!

-if a useful artifact- promote
-if useless craft artifact- kill
-if fell moof- promote to nobility and give personal guard

  • Alphabetically by Name (first, last, whatever), example: Urist is at the bottom of the order, Aavrist is at the top of  order
  • Ranked by Racial Traits (Pick one of the 30), example: By Cooperation a dwarf would never deny (his) own needs just to compromise with somebody else is a the top of the order, a dwarf who sacrifices (his) own needs to get along with others  is at the bottom of the order
  • By Favorite Animal/Food/Mineral/Metal/Drink, example: A dwarf who likes cave crocodiles is at the top of the order, a dwarf who likes kittens is at the bottom of the order.
  • By flight distance or height. Immigrants (and children) are launched via bridgeapult into a target system by arranged either across the x/y or z axis. Dwarves can be ranked by: Nearest to the bullseye, highest vertical distance traveled, longest distance propelled. Dwarves may choose to reapply for a new ranking with all of the risks involved.
  • By drop training. Dwarves are dropped via drawbridge down X z-levels, with either only 1 bottom or a series of alternating "catching" bridges. Dwarves can be ranked by: distance traveled, soonest to leave the hospital after after sorting.
  • Lady of the Lake Style: All dwarves are assigned to the military and left to select their own weapons of choice. Dwarves are then sorted by the quality and type of weapon selected
  • By bedroom selection: Create a series of identical beds equidistant from the level staircase/ramp. When a dwarf picks one of the bedrooms, he is assigned to the matching caste. The bedrooms are then unassigned to process the next batch of dwarves.
  • Crafting test. Have each dwarf craft one statue. The subject of the statue is used to rank the dwarves.
  • By Age
  • By number of children
  • By number of pets

Have a sock be dropped down to the lowest cavern level (by garbage chute).  Make sure there's a path down there as well, but make it a very long path through all the caverns.  Whoever claims the sock and goes to collect it becomes a noble and gets to retire from all labors.  If they make it back alive with the sock then they get a tomb as well, otherwise they are left to haunt the caverns.  Do this once per year to limit the number of nobles, and if a noble claims a second sock then he or she becomes king or queen.

I'm fairly sure sock-claiming is random and arbitrary, and the trip through the caverns just makes it harder (and more entertaining)

Continuing on with the 1984 theme, since df lacks giant TVs you could make the walls of the peasants rooms entirely out of windows so they can have no privacy and any miscreants cannot hide from big brother

If adamantine is perfectly rigid, as shown by having 0 strain at fracture in the raw files, then the speed of sound in the metal approaches the speed of light. Adamantine musical instruments would produce ultrasonic vibrations, and cut off the fingers of the musician.

Oh joy the panopticon will lead the way forward for enlightened ideals.  I think this is a fantastic idea.  I can see at least three distinct classes emerging off the top of my head, also it would make vampiring a lot more dangerous.
