I'm just going to put a 1x1 stockpile next to the butcher with a bin/barrel for all those bones that keep piling up.

-Chops the FB up, grabs the bin, stuffs all the bones and and yells "ORDER UP!"-

DF is becoming too modern for me.

That could actually be fun....and sand is an infinite resource.  Sand traps...the dwarf fortress way.

Speaking of sand traps, we really a sarlacc pit type-enemy inhabiting the deserts.

Urist McLumberjack cancels fell tree. Interrupted by horrifying tentacled vagina-mouth.

You can't make the idlers productive, this is Dwarf Fortress!  Build a lever room.  Fifty levers attached to nothing, all set to repeated pull.  That'll keep the idlers busy for a good long time.

Better yet, attach those levers to some obscure killing machine.

More idlers means more military dwarves training and sparring. Also more haulers and masons for building megaprojects.

Also not having your entire fortress dedicated to siege cleanup would be amazing.

No, if it has to be something, it'll probably be boxes/chests or something totally new (wheelbarrow).

Keeping idlers busy? Get clear glass and textile industries going. They are both very labour intensive so mass-manufacturing will eat up tens of idlers in jobs. This assumes you don't want a stone (block) architecture megaproject, as that will always eat up all idlers.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

@white_darkness: first, Mod the  game to collect sand like clay, and invent golf a la Bullroarer Took(The Hobbit.) Make a weapons trap filled with warhammers, and wait for a.severed part to sail of in an arc.

this could actually defeat the single biggest culprit behind f.p.s. death-sieges

enough time and every siege means constant clean up for a whole season when guess what shows up...

another siege. this maakes even carefully managed f.p.s. culling forts dull

this is huge

"Nothin, sir.  There's nothing to haul, so me and my boys were just throwing a par -"

"Here's a spear.  Now you're busy."

"But.. the last squad.. we spent 2 days cleaning the blood outta their socks...  I'm.. I'm a legendary soap maker!  I've got 8 kids!"

"I don't wanna hear it.  You can either head to the barracks and train, or go explore the caverns"
