Well you can melt metal in a firepit if its hot enough but be sure to make molds. Putting ceramic molds 'under' the ore in the firepit when heating them should catch the liquid in the mold. Once you fill a mold you should be able to use that further to make metal things.

Added some more mods to the OP, down below Buildcraft. Namely Forestry, Thermal Expansion and Buildcraft Advanced Power Systems. I really feel that they round Buildcraft out into a whole useful mod, rather than a simple means of automating things.

They could do a complete rewrite of it. I heard that the code is a mess.
Not sure if i could trust those sources. (namely some TN players)


EDIT:

Looks like i already got some metal (small sphalerite), but its invisible.
(as in, completely transparant.)

I seem to be missing all "small" ores.

Did you put the resources in the correct place? Try redownloading the resources folder?

Mayby you could try multimc?
Could be conflicting block ID's, is IC2 the only mod?
(you'll probs want RP2 and BC too anyway)

because I go through odd moments of 'cannot be arsed', then want to install it again half an hour later.

I didn't not follow suggestions, I mentioned several facts that could lead to helping sort it out.

Since magicloader or whatever didn't work, have you tried installing forge manually?

Start with a fresh download of minecraft and install forge into the jar. It takes all of 15 seconds to do. Run minecraft with forge ONLY installed and see if it works.

Also which version of forge are you using?
