I've been playing some TFC and here are my 2 cents :
Wait what?
Playing with TFC, i make a charcoal pile and go to cut a few trees because why not.
When i come back, the pile is already completely done.
I wasnt away very long. Guess they sped it up alot in the last version.
Yeah it shouldn't take as long to burn it down to charcoal, and now the charcoal is spit out into the world I guess. That would suck if you missed it and the items despawned.
-The new charcoal generation was in debug mode by accident (15 seconds instead of 18 in-game hours), the new version "corrects" this (which is why i havent updated since i don't want to babysit it now that it can despawn).
Prospector picks are used to tell what ores are in a fairly large area infront of you.
But locating the ores is rather tricky as you have to find them yourself.
Sluices are used to pan for gold.
No, in the most recent build prospector picks are removed entirely and sluices now 'pan' for any ore nearby and are the main source of locating ore.
-Sluice boxes aren't that great in my opinion. First it's very difficult to set them up properly (channeling water) when you can't dig through stone properly. And then, even when properly built, they require you to feed them by hand all the time, but from my experience they don't give much metal if any. Filling a box with dirt gives me 1 crappy gem on average. (and as Supercharazad noted, you can still make prospector picks out of metal, just not stone)
-Gold pans are really erratic, some spots in/near water you can pick, some others you can't, but there's no obvious reason as to why.
-Small rocks are the proper way to get your first ore, in my opinion. Once i found a place where rocks drop zinc ore, i kept finding ore consistently in the whole area. It was kinda tedious but it worked, then after gathering around 16 small pieces i could make my first ingot and from there it got better. I advise making both a prospector pick and a pickaxe before starting to mine though. Also i think that ore generation is properly fixed since i could find many deposits underground.
By the way, i was lurking on the TFC forums earlier and someone suggested that getting ore from rocks doesnt mean that this ore is in the area, but only that the first rock layer in your area can contain this type of ore (also it would seem that rocks cannot drop any higher tier of ores, only the starter ones).
