Mali Sharia state...*sigh*

The USA now have my permission to 'free' the country.

They have nothing to gain so...

Is Mali the ancestral home of the American-Jewish population? No.

Welp, you're right. No USA intervention I suppose.

Wait, didn't the junta hand power to the head of parliament?

Okay, apparently Captain what's-his-name formally handed power to the civilians, but kept the CRDRE (the junta) as a parallel power structure, and apparently still command much of the army. Fuck, this is confusing.

Malian politics are even more confusing, because so little reporting is done on it, so you only get some small pieces of information here and there.

I confused the Tuareg rebels with the Junta. The Junta giving power to the parliament was indeed something I saw on the news. Guess they didn't do it in the way everybody was expecting/hoping then.

It's not unusual for military coups to end up with like-minded-civilians taking control of the state (as either muppets or puppetmasters, depending on the case). In fact I pretty much assume this to be the default case when I read those kind of statements in the news. Barring honorable exceptions (such as the Carnation Revolution), the general rule is that military coups for democracy make as much sense as fucking for virginity.

From the little the news said about the junta it seemed like they just wanted the power because the government did not gave them enough funding/etc. Although them still failing after the successful coup makes me think it was probably for power (as you say) or they needed someone to blame for their own strategic errors, as they still totally sucked at combating the Tuareg.

It's a shame. Both the junta staying in power and the Tuareg not being what they claimed they were.

when wasn't politics confusing? I want to go to that time!

You are now under feudal control to your local baron, after spending your years farming in backbreaking labor you are forced into the army against your will... politics for you is easy, do what your leaders say, or else.  :P

This is very unfortunate. Mali was one of the few democratic and relatively free states in West Africa, if not the best of them. Between this and the recent Egyptian "elections" putting Islamist groups in power, North Africa has taken a definite downturn. I don't like armed conflict or anything, but I really do wish that the liberal factions in these areas would stand up for themselves more. Unfortunately, being a liberal faction means that you're less likely to want to crush all opposition. Then again, Europe had a similar problem in the 1800's, and that eventually turned out alright.

After two World Wars and millions upon millions of deaths, that is.

That I don't get. The Turaeg were fighting for independence. That was it. And now they got it.

Okay, so maybe their "secularism" was a bit of a lie, but hey, alliance of convenience and what-not. And besides, if the international community recognized Awazad, maybe the Turaeg secularists might have a bit of an incentive to actually keep on being secularists. (At the cost of the Mali coup plotters having less incentive to stop military rule.)

You forgot communists. :P

Though to be fair, Afghanistan has a relatively insignificant amount of oil, you could say that the Americans really believed they were getting righteous vengeance for 9/11 when they invaded.
Fixed for ya.
