I don't understand, why would you want to keep kids out of a danger room?

Whelp... I wasn't going to say it, but I've had a change of perspective.

What we need to prevent female dwarves enlisted in the military from having babies, and thus having those babies die as a result of being killed in combat, or use of danger rooms is very simple.

We need a Toxoplasma gondii syndrome. Then we simple make the barracks where all the women train into a pasture for cats! They can live amongst the cats, eat amongst the cats, sleep amongst the cats and work amongst the cats. They'll contract the syndrom and then it's problem solved.

I am a terrible person.

Also, I'm pretty sure the [STERILE] tag can, in fact, be added to a creature by a syndrome in the current version . . .  *sets up the modder-signal*

It's like a gift that keeps on giving.

THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
Won't somebody think of the children?

We have.  We've thought about all the interesting ways we can use them for extra labour or ways to train them into uncaring and nigh-unkillable soldiers

I've banned girls from the army, because a) I was planning on running a 30 dwarf fortress and b) they breed like rabbits in DF34...

Seriously, my first experience with a danger room once I updated had eight babies missing limbs in the hospital, as it's the female dwarves that seem to arrive with the best combat skills (best not to think about that).

Now I've got a new mother taking little Obok Sneakconstruct, age 4 months (but with long, neatly combed beard and moustache), hunting.

Given the ramping up of the goblin ambushes, this might be entertaining...

my children are... useful. I keep them as the Spartans did. Only the best live, the others get the pointy room of death. When they come of age I have two squads I pool them into. Beyond those 20 children-turned-DEATHMACHINES the others get to be dorfs of a simpler nature either farming, crafting, mining or building.

The Spartans had a sadistic setup. I actually studied this, feel free to implement into Dwarf Fortress, in fact, consider this a challenge.

They'd be taken away from their family from as young as 8, and put in the barracks. At this age, they were kept with boys their age, but the strongest boy was assigned to be the captain. This boy was incredibly harsh.

One of the greatest feats a Spartan boy could accomplish was to succeed at the Festival of the Cheeses. Basically a stronger boy about 14-18 was given a whip, and would force the other boys through a complicated obstacle course where there would be cheese at the end whilst whipping him as forcefully as he could the entire time.

Spartan boys about 13 onwards would be drafted in special killsquads by the politicians, lets call these the nobles. They would be given a spear and shield and used as assassins, to kill escaping slaves, hunt for wildlife, and to basically scare the shivers out of anyone who would rebel against them.

How about that for a Spartan day care? Spartan boys would think a danger room IS daycare. Kiddy killsquads.

And, how about this factual information. They were reverse dwarves. Spartan warriors were to be clean shaven at all time. Huge chins are manly. If a Spartan had run away from battle they would basically kick the man out of government; no voting, and no participating in special events. And people would spit on him in the street. AND NO SHAVING.

So they left the Spartans and that's where dwarves came from.
