This thread makes me thing about the whole pledge of allegiance deal they have in public schools. Why not take "One nation under God" out of the pledge if we can take it off the money? Not that anyone's forcing you (usually) to say the pledge whereas you're pretty much forced to use money.

I thought in order to gain citizenship you have to say the pledge at least once. Plus I think there are a few other situations where you have to say the pledge.

Which is something I don't understand. I didn't choose to be born in this country, I consider it more of a temporary residence. I guess I could understand it for an immigrant who wants to live here, but not me. Sorry, off to burn some American flags and piss on pictures of George Washington.

To the ninja above me: Money is the root of all evils, so yes I agree with you there.  ;D
Where do you want to live then, YOU DIRTY COMMUNIST TERRORIST SATANIST SATAN TOM CRRUUUIIISSSSEEEE?

Though seriously, most of the world probably ain't much better.

I'll take basically anywhere in Europe honestly. Preferably one of the nordic countries. Hopefully I can get in in the next few years before Pope Santorum I is elected (him being a serious candidate is reason enough to flee the country imo).  :D

Indeed

reminds me of when I was in Grade 8 (the last grade before highschool) and the teacher saw some people weren't singing "Oh Canada" so she put them against the wall and had them sing it individually.

Oddly enough it was beaten into my head... but no one there actually could say almost any of the words.

For that matter, the whole "sworn in on a Bible" thing is a much more serious triviality than the money.
Wait, don't people swear on their respective holy books? Ie isn't swearing on Bible only for self-proclaimed Christians?
Unless something has changed recently, AFAIK all oaths of office, swearing into courts, etc. are done on a Bible, though people can 'affirm' rather than 'swear'. In either case, what of atheists? For that matter, what about people belonging to religions without any formal holy book? It would be much better to do away with the whole thing, or possibly change it to an oath taken with your hand on a copy of the Constitution or something. Though most of our politicians would probably end up spontaneously combusting if they tried that.

I'm pretty sure jurors have the option to give the oath without any holy book, but as far as I know it always contains the phrase 'so help you god.' I do remember there was that 'controversy' over a congressman being sworn in using a Quran a few years back, but as far as I know they aren't required to use a book anyway.

The people who made this petition are a bunch of slack-jawed buffoons. Our nation has bigger problems than words on paper, so I'm a little perturbed by people wasting time and resources on something this trivial. We can worry about this when everyone actually has ENOUGH of the paper they so despise to actually live comfortably.

The issue is purely academic, because non-Christians don't really stand of chance of getting elected for a public office.

Oh, it could be done. They'd just have to pretend to be devout Christians for every moment of their lives until the point where they were elected (or, if they wanted to run for reelection, until they retire).

Maybe instead we should add Nordic True Runes to our currency. The USA would be the most powerful nation on earth.

But it's a very, very simple thing to change.  Just slightly modify what it says on future prints of the currency.  So while it may seem "trivial", it also has such a trivial solution that will barely cost anything that you can't really justify ignoring the issue.

Have fun with the EU collapsing and all. Economically, I mean.
I don't think so really.  It's kindof like the US - slow recovery and a kindof stagnation, but not really a collapse.  Greece may end up bankrupt, but if worst comes to worst it'll probably just be cut loose rather than be allowed to drag the whole Euro down (incidentally Norway doesn't use Euros, if it's the currency that's the concern).

In a similar vein,

The "under god" part of the pledge of the allegiance is why I have not said it in over 15 years. This kind of bothers me as an American patriot.

Also even religiously it sort of feels odd.

So... are we actually saying that God himself is actually rooting for our country?
