Lets get killed in Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup
« on: March 22, 2012, 04:57:17 pm »

It's time.

We've spent my life training. Well, my apprenticeship anyways. We always were kind of impatient. The important thing is that we've been training, and now we're ready to head into the depths of the dungeon and retrieve the fabled Orb of Zot.

But before we begin, there are a few things we need to know...

Name? Race? Class? Ah, they are but words, but you, my lovely voices, can decide how they sound.

Hopefully you can see me through the darkness...

Yay, crawl LP!

Say... start with a demonspawn chaos knight for lulz. Maybe get a bit more serious after that. But go Xomling the DsCK for starters.

DsCK of Xom, yesh. Then MiIE, because it's surprisingly workable.

No, let's go with serious winnable characters from the beginning. This won't be any fun if you don't get anywhere, because D:3 splats tend to get really exhausting. Try a HaHu - very good with slings and has decent defenses in EV and Stealth. Go Trog or Okawaru.

Play the combo that sounds fun to you. I'll toss my vote in for VaNe of Kiku.

I've enjoyed Stone Soup Let's Plays in the past so I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out! It seems like most people here are already familiar with it, and GlyphGryph from your opening post it seems like you expected people to be. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of style are you planning to do here-roleplay or mechanic focused, serious builds intended for winning or just for fun, tile or not, etc?

I know a few of the Let's Plays I've seen of Crawl have used the Demonspawn Chaosknight, so that's certainly popular. There are some species I've never seen people use though. I looks like Octopodes are new if you have v.10. I haven't seen anyone use a Draconian , Tengu or a Centaur yet though, so if you planned on doing more than one character (and from what I've seen of Crawl you really should) any of those would be good to see.

From my understanding classes are much less important in Crawl, especially as the game goes on. I've seen people go both melee focused and magic focused and I'm wondering if there are any viable hybrid playstyles. You could always go Wanderer (if you do decide to go magic I haven't seen a Summoner run yet).

Whatever the case may be, I'm looking forward to seeing where this thread goes. Good luck!

A Demonspawn Chaos Knight, yes? Oh yes. Loyal to the wondrous Xom, who gifted us with so many minds. Xomling, by name, a chosen name rather than a given one, a sign of loyalty to our god, much like the two dozen tattoos of his name that cover our body.

                                     Xomling the Skirmisher
                                     Demonspawn of Xom
                 .                   Health: 16/16     ========================
            ...  ....                Magic:  1/1       ========================
           ....##.....               AC:  5            Str: 12
          ............#              EV: 10            Int: 13
         #............##             SH:  0            Dex: 12
         ...............             XL:  1 Next:  0%  Place: Dungeon:1
         ...............             Wp: a) +2 spear {=f}
        .......>.....)...            Qv: -) Nothing quivered
        ........@........
        ..(..........)...
         ...............
         #........?...##
         #............#
          .....##......
           ....  .....
            ...  ....
                 .

In our hand we wield the spear with which we achieved our first kill. On our back the leather armor we had crafted from that kill.

We are ready. We descend.

No tiles, because updates are a lot easier off the console. My posts will be mostly roleplay, probably with one "image" per turn. I usually play Naga, so this fight-oriented class will be new for me. I wouldn't mind trying an Octopode next though.

The important thing to note here is that I'm really not very good at this game, so the key is getting in as good a story as possible before I die. :P

Ah, yes, the taste of first blood. Just a bat, a simple bat, but the first of many to die, I am sure. But... what is this strange feeling in my head? A new voice? Is it... could it be... have we finally...

You kill the bat!
You see here a bat corpse.
Xom's attention almost turns to you for a moment.
You feel gritty.

It is! None could make us feel as gritty as he - it is Xom! It is Xom! Let us rejoice, for already our dreams begin to come true!

I quickly gather up the items that surround the entrance to the dungeon - the leavings of would be adventurers that could not defeat the bat that guarded the door? Hah.

Ah, but that smell... yes, our first two-legged victim. Opponent. Enemy. Corpse. Oh, how we laugh as the goblin slides off the end of our spear.

This will be... fun.

Where... where are we?

Ah.

Well, I suppose we know what those mysterious scrolls do now, and the pile of them will serve us well in an emergency.

Now, to continue on with...

"You need some minor adjustments, mortal!"
Your body is suffused with distortional energy.
You feel less in control of your magic.
There is a nasty taste in your mouth for a moment.

BLECH. Dear Xom, that taste, and... the hum. Oh, the hum. But... yes... he has gifted us. Hail Xom. Praise Xom. Though the taste is foul, I can feel the poison, taste it, and know how easily I could turn it into a weapon - it appears to harm us not. And the hum... I know not what it does, but it does not seem to hinder us. We press on, yes.

We make short work of a trio of goblins when, no more than two minutes after the last words of Xom,  he speaks again. A helmet, yes - and surely blessed! We immediately shove it onto our skulls. Perhaps it will save our life yet. Truly, truly, we are lucky to have a god dedicated to our success as the mighty Xom!

We make short work of the monsters remaining on the level, and as we do we feel ourselves change. Bony plates grow on our arms, and we full stronger somehow - these, we know, are not the work of Xom, but our demonic nature feeding on the dungeon and the slaughter, using it as an opportunity to assert itself.

Glorious.

We move, Xom's words ringing in our ears, and his glorious trail following us...

"Go forth and redecorate, my child!"
@§§§§§

Okay guys, I want advice on skill focus and stat advancement. I went Strength this time, obviously. And should we chug all our potions to see what they are?

We also found a book of Transfigurations just before I saved if we want to learn any spells from that. That will be next update though. I'm tempted to save up for Dragon Form, but I'm not sure how my new "wild magic" will effect things...

Re: Potions... depends on how Xommy you feel like being. Iirc, Xom gets happier if you chug un-ID potions in high tension situations -- but, of course, that's incredibly likely to get you killed :P

As for skills, I'unno. Probably melee focus (Fighting, weapon, appropriate defensive skills) until you've got some leeway in survival, then some casting hybridization (providing you either get rid of that magic effecting mutation or something to counteract it, wizardry ring mebbe). A few points into Int (eventually) for low-hanging utility spells couldn't hurt, but that's probably a bit ahead. Really depends on if you're going heavy armor or not; if so, no magic, if not, limited utility junk.

I haven't had much luck with melee characters though, so YMMV, heh.

Well, if you can get your heavy armor up to a decent level the magic penalty is minimal, no?
